Amazon.com Review
Ideal for sewing decorative and finishing stitches on linens, formal wear, and stretchy fabric, this 3/4 serger from Brother includes 22 built-in stitch functions and interchangeable creative feet. Stitch functions include 3-thread overlock, 4-thread overlock, narrow hemming, rolled hemming, and ribbon lock. The machine can also be used to form gentle gathers, join laces, sew spaghetti straps, and create fabric flowers for formal gowns. Its color-coded set up is convenient, quick, and straightforward, and the foot pedal offers sensitive speed control. For added efficiency and precision, the machine includes stitch width control, outside differential feed control, lay-in threading, the F.A.S.T. lower looper threading system, and an easy-to-remove stitch finger for narrow or rolled edges. It calls for standard sewing machine needles, and its flat surface converts to free arm for pant hems and cuffs.

The serger comes with a full set of starter accessories, including a soft cover, a blind hem/multipurpose guide foot, a gathering foot, and a set of needles. A removable trim trap and a cleaning brush keep operation tidy. Additional feet are available separately for creating blind hem, pin tuck, and flat lock stitching. Brother includes a thorough instruction booklet with this model as well as CD-ROMs for operation tips and techniques. The machine carries a five-year limited warranty. --Emily Bedard

5 out of 5 stars don't hesitate, this is a great serger!   November 24, 2008

I debated whether to get a serger and how much to spend on one for quite some time. I am mostly self-taught with a sewing machine and didn't have much money for a serger.

I'm glad I took the plunge. The Brother 1034d was a great choice! It was easy to thread and learn to use. I had never used a serger before, but I was serging simple garments the day I opened the box. This serger is a great value for someone looking for an entry level serger. I wish I would have bought one a long time ago. This relatively inexpensive machine is fabulous, and I think it will be a long time before I need or want to upgrade to something fancier.

5 out of 5 stars Wow!   October 30, 2008

I chose this serger based on people who had actually used the machine. It is everything they said.

This is my first serger. Threading it is a breeze - just do it exactly as the instructions indicate. An extra light is helpful.

The video instructions suck. If you have never used a serger get some books and read them first.

2 out of 5 stars Instructions are not good!!!   October 20, 2008

If you are not an experienced sewing machine operator, prepare yourself to be frustrated. The video is somewhat useful but it rushes through the settings and the booklet is totatlly worthless. Besides...YOU WILL NEED A SEPARATE SEWING MACHINE for regular stitching, this one doesn't do any of the traditional stitches!!!

4 out of 5 stars a well-rounded machine   September 23, 2008

great for a beginner. easy-to-follow instructions for threading. took me a few tries to get the tension right but I think that's how it goes with sergers...

obviously this machine doesn't do everything a top-of-the-line machine would but it also doesn't cost as much.

4 out of 5 stars my first serger   September 13, 2008

I researched a lot before I bought this serger. Since I don't have any experience with another serger, I will say that this one is a good quality for the price. The threading is a little tricky, even with color coding. Also, it took me 10 broken threads and 1 broken needle before I figured out that I had to rethread the needles when I rethreaded the loopers...EVERY time. That was a frustrating night. However, I really enjoy my serger and have enjoyed the professional looking seams.
