5 out of 5 stars Beyond Boundaries, by Mary Wine   December 31, 2005

The human race is in big trouble. Fewer and fewer children are being born. In fact, the only fertile women seem to be those in pastoral or primitive societies, such as the Amish, the Quakers, and the Native Americans on the Western reservations. No one knows what is causing this plague of infertility, so the few fertile women have become a commodity. Most of these pastoral societies have been wiped out by the kidnapping of the women and the murder of the men.

In fact, only the American Indian women survive, and they are being protected behind a strong force field fence. Only hand-picked males may enter to breed with the women, none of the women can leave, or they face being kidnapped and sold. Chenoa lives peacefully in her society, until one day she is kidnapped from her home on the reservation by raiders, and brought out beyond the barrier. Her life will never be the same.

This is great science fiction combined with a hot romance! The population disaster plot is well known in science fiction, but Ms. Wine brings us a new voice to freshen and enliven the story. Rather than dwell on the technical aspects of the problem, the author concentrates instead on the societal and personal effects, including the effect on our freedoms and the relationships between people. The relationship of the hero and heroine reflects and amplifies the novel's theme - modernity vs. traditionalism, science vs. nature, thinking vs. feeling. Chenoa is an admirable heroine who, in a world that is a mystery to her, manages to survive and be happy. The love scenes are quite explicit, with a hint of macho dominance, but they should not be offensive except to the most sensitive of readers. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and recommend it highly to science fiction and romance readers. -- Jean, Fallen Angel Reviews (courtesy of Fallen Angel Reviews)
