Product Description
Do you think that healthy food couldn't possibly taste good? Does the idea of "eating healthy" conjure up images of roughage and steamed vegetables? Author Ellie Krieger, host of Food Network's Healthy Appetite, will change all that. A registered dietitian, Ellie is also a lover and proponent of good, fresh food, simply but deliciously prepared. And she's not about denial--no nonfat foods here, because when you take the fat out of natural foods, in go the chemicals. Don't deny yourself butter--use a pat of it, but put it front and center on those mashed potatoes, so you can revel in it with all your senses. The Food You Crave is all you'll need to change the way you eat and change the way you feel. It contains 200 recipes that cover every meal of the day and every craving you might have. Every recipe contains a complete nutritional breakdown, as well as tips on ingredients and techniques that will keep you eating smart and eating well.

5 out of 5 stars Very Tasty and Healthier!   September 19, 2008
I have really enjoyed this cookbook! I have made 6 recipes - The Thai/coconut chicken, Asian greens, turkey meatloaf, French fries, steak tacos and carrot cupcakes. All were very good and especially loved the turkey meatloaf, fries, coconut chicken and carrot cupcakes(for my son's 2nd birthday)! I got into a recipe rut and this has helped out tremendously. Healthier can be easy and tasty. I am an RD and love to cook - her book is fun, informative and full of good recipes. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars For the Person who loves food!   September 19, 2008
What an awesome cookbook and guide to better eating. I wish she would do a children's cookbook to teach adults what to do. If we help our kids we will not have the obesity problems we do now.

4 out of 5 stars Luscious and simple   September 14, 2008
I tested some of the recipes in this cookbook and was quite happy with them. There are ways to trim calories even further (I am a big fan of egg substitute and Splenda), but today the trend is to offer recipes that are both healthy and 'crave-worthy', and this one is right on the mark. If you buy this cookbook, you can make the recipe 'as is' or find the way to cut calories that is acceptable to you. Some people can live with near-zero fat desserts, other cannot. Some people worship Splenda, others loathe it. The great advantage of this cookbook is that recipes are crave-worthy for anyone, including people who do not need to restrict their calories.

5 out of 5 stars Healthy AND yummy!   September 9, 2008
This book is great! I have made many of the recipes and not only are they easy...but they taste terrific! I have been on a mission lately to cook healthier for my family and this book has just done the trick. I love the way that Ellie puts the foods that we love along with the foods that are healthy for us so that way we don't feel deprived. For example, putting both whole wheat flour and regular all purpose flour gives the taste that we love but cuts back on the badness if we had just used entirely the all purpose flour. I have been very conscious of my decisions when shopping since buying and reading this book. I think that everyone should add this recipe book to their kitchen! I LOVE IT!!!

3 out of 5 stars Okay.... I sold mine   September 7, 2008
I was really excited to get this book. I like watching Ellie's show on TV and I enjoy the tips she gives for healthy cooking. The book is nice. It has beautiful pictures, great tips, and average recipes... none that I would consider to be brilliant. And don't get me wrong. Some of the recipes are very good. The shrimp with feta is delicious and in lots of the desserts you will barely miss the fat and calories that she leaves out. However I think the concept "The Food You Crave" is flawed. It seems like a great idea--a cookbook full of everyone's favorites, made healthier. Unfortunately, when I crave these foods, the real version is more satisfying. I would rather have a little bit of the real thing, than an extra helping of the impostor. Back when I still owned this book I would find myself flipping through the pages, finding a pretty picture of something I wanted to eat, and then looking up another recipe for it that I knew would taste better. It just didn't get a lot of use in my kitchen. If you don't forsee this being an issue, go ahead and buy it. I actually ended up selling it to a friend who really enjoys it, so I think there is definitely an audience for this book. I'm just not in it.
