Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Elaborately decorated cookies fill the shelves of high-end bakery cases, tempting shoppers with bright colors and whimsical shapes. The cookies are beautiful, but buying them in a bakery can be shockingly expensive, and their flavor often doesn’t live up to their appearance. Now home bakers can have their pretty cookies and enjoy eating them too!

Thanks to the clear instructions and practical methods developed by authors Valerie Peterson and Janice Fryer, amateur cookie crafters can achieve bakery-quality design and homemade fresh taste. Cookie Craft gives readers access to the entire world of decorated cookies, beginning with an inspirational gallery of 150 colorful cookies guaranteed to start those creative juices flowing.

The authors go on to discuss ingredients, supplies, equipment and technique. They include four delicious recipes for rolled cookie doughs (Traditional Sugar, Chocolate, Nutty, and Gingerbread) that provide perfect blank canvases for decorating, and, of course, their recipe for versatile Royal Icing.

In the most important section, they share the design techniques accumulated and perfected during hundreds of afternoons spent crafting thousands of cookies. Cookie crafters will learn how to pipe, flood, and sugar their cookies, how to design color palettes that work with every season, how to make cookies stand up in fun 3-D structures, and much more!

I had been looking for a book that would cover everything that I'd needed to know in decorating cookies. Well, this is the book!!!! Excellent...with easy steps from A to Z. Realistic in detail, great format and very motivational. A must have if you love your cookies!

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and easy to follow   November 8, 2008

This book is for people who like to get really obsessive with their cookies. While it provides an excellent review of the basics of baking cut-out cookies (including recipes), the best part of this book is the discussion of many permutations on the basic outline & flood technique of icing cookies. It's easy to do, and once you get the hang of it, you'll have fun with all the variations (e.g. flood-on-flood details, flooding over piping for texture, using toothpicks to marble colors). The book also addresses the use of sugars (both pre- and post-baking), imprinting, stencils, and use of other decorations (nuts, candies, fondant, etc.). Even if you're experienced with cookie decorating, you'll likely pick up a ton of new ideas, tricks, and tips. The book itself is very well-organized; the layout and photography are lovely and diagrams are included where appropriate.

5 out of 5 stars The only cookie decorating book you need!   August 31, 2008

I don't write reviews too often, but this book definitely moved me to write one. I have some time off after moving and wanted to teach myself a new skill, and my family loves sweets, so... cake/cookie decorating it is! Comparing to icing cakes, cookies are a breeze (at least to this novice.) The designs in this book are cute without being too twee, and are relatively easy to do. I made the wedding cakes and hearts, and both turned out great, despite NEVER having done it before! The cookie recipe is even good, and I was a little suspicious (I've just made the vanilla sugar base cookie.) Basically, be prepared to buy a little equipment (Amazon sells a great selection of cookie cutters, actually!) and spend some time. If you're making cookies for an event, start a day or two beforehand, or even make extra dough and freeze it for whenever you have a free weekend!

I can't recommend this book enough. I checked out probably 5-6 cookie books, I was totally unimpressed with the rest. This is the one to have! (Love the recipe for Royal Icing too. It worked great and I can use those pasteurized liquid egg whites - no ordering online if I don't want to!)

5 out of 5 stars Great All Around Cookie Book   August 11, 2008

This book is great for a beginner or an advanced decorator. The book contains everything from delicous recipes to step by step directions to make gourmet looking cookies, and ideas for all sorts of themed cookies.

I love that it breaks steps down so that it is not overwhelming and seems easier to accomplish.

I could not reccomend this book more. It would be great for a gift as well!
