Rosenthal TAC 02 Teapot

A modernist classic first introduced in 1969, the TAC 02 teapot is perhaps the best known of Gropius's tableware designs. Resembling an upside-down teacup, the domed pot appears to float over a recessed base and is beautifully balanced by the upturned, flat-topped spout on one side and the low-swept, bent-elbow handle on the other. For an extra fillip, the teapot handle lines up perfectly with the right-angle thumb hook on the lid. Attached to the teapot lid is a porcelain tea-strainer perforated with small holes for steeping and removing tea leaves. The same handle and lid elements are found on the matching sugar bowl and creamer, which, along with the 45-ounce teapot, create an impressive tea service. Rosenthal crafts the TAC 02 collection from fine, semi-translucent porcelain that is conveniently safe for both the microwave and dishwasher. --Ann Bieri
