In 1973, Austrian glassmaker Claus Riedel created Riedel's top-shelf line of crystal wine glasses with the aid of the Association of Italian Sommeliers. The resulting Sommeliers series is designed for extraordinary effect on the taste and bouquet of a wide range of vintages. Shaped to highlight the best traits of specific varietals, the brilliantly clear full lead crystal stems are hand-made and mouth-blown in Austria. Functional as well as beautiful, the line now includes a long list of glasses for everything from wine to beer to spirits.

Designed specifically for the delicate flavors of mature cognacs, the Sommeliers Cognac XO glass features a broad belly and trim chimney. The shape concentrates the spirit's subtle bouquets while emphasizing its fruit, body, and fire. Also works well for other wood-aged spirits December 6, 2005

I use this glass for single-malt whisky as well as various brandies. Works well for well-aged spirits, even those at "cask strength" (elevated alcohol content ["proof"]). They are relatively fragile, so I would recommend them only for home use, and even then not in any kind of hectic/party setting. But they DO certainly enhance the experience of imbibing a fine distilled beverage! DR
