Whoops, bad product. November 4, 2008
Well, I LOVED the idea of this surface thermometer, and it actually worked great... the first time. After that, the surface area blacked and became unreadable. While the arrow still probably showed an accurate temperature, I couldn't tell what it was as the grid was completely blacked out. It then became very unsightly to have on the grill, and I tossed it.

I've moved on to the old fashioned way of testing my grill... hand over heat, and count.

Just feel bad I gave this as a gift as well... my brother got as many uses as I did.

Works Great August 27, 2008
I have had this thermometer for about one year now. I BBQ about 3 or 4 times a month. Works well. I always leave it on the grill of my BBQ. It gets real dirty from all the grease and grime and must be wiped off with some household cleaner so it can read. I use a wood burning BBQ so my temps rarely get above 450 degrees. Last week I had my BBQ at 200 degrees for 6 hours and my two thermometers both read right on at 200 degrees.

When this one wears out I'll buy another.

Worthless, but travels far when thrown December 23, 2007
If you read my reviews, you already know that I can almost always find something worthwhile about every product. Unfortunately, that is not the case with this one, unless you count how far it goes when you throw it off a deck.

After a few grilling sessions, all the markings on this thermometer completely disappeared, rendering it useless. And by a few, I mean 4-5, not twenty. Then I had to toss it.

Part of the problem is that this is designed to be placed directly on the hot grates, not hung above them, so the temperatures it has to endure are very high. Plus, it just isn't heat resistant enough to function properly.

I now hang an oven thermometer from the warming grates so that it is over the grates, but not resting on them. That works well, and two years later it still isn't destroyed. Unlike this thermometer, which lasted less than a week.

I gave this grill thermometer to my dad for Father's Day. It works perfect when he wants to sear fish and steaks too. It's easy to remove from the grill too. I would recommend this item to anyone who does a lot of searing or wants to know the surface temperature of their grill. You can use this for a griddle or an indoor grill on your stove too.

No matter where I set my temperature controls on the grill, this thermometer always reads the temp at 500 degrees or more. I placed the thermometer in our oven and set the oven for 350 degrees yet the thermometer showed the temp at 450-500. I have called Taylor's customer service on several occasions and they never bother to call back. I would never buy another Taylor product.
