Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.com Product Description
From extra seats for a party to a comfortable perch for the front porch, these stylish chairs serve a variety of indoor or outdoor needs. Plus, when you're through, they fold neatly for storage. Combined with Strathwood's matching round folding table (not included), they make an attractive bistro-style suite for al fresco dining.

If they're left outdoors, slotted seats allow rain to drip through rather than collect and damage the wood. Both chairs made from kapur wood, a high-density Southeast Asian hardwood with excellent weather-resistant properties. Light enough to move easily around deck or lawn, kapur requires no finishing and is exceptionally-sturdy--with enough oil to repel the ravages of rain, sun, and dew. Rust-resistant hardware and mortise and tenon construction also add to the pieces' strength and durability.

Before shipment, your new furniture received a generous application of teak oil. Teak oil provides protection from the ultraviolet sunrays. Left untreated, Kapur will weather to a soft warm shade of gray similar to the weathering of teak. If you prefer to prevent this weathering process, you may apply additional coats of teak oil. The frequency of necessary teak oil applications will depend on the intensity of the sun in your environment, but typically, one or two coats per year is sufficient. Teak oil can usually be found at a marine dealer, hardware store, or internet dealer. If you allow your furniture to weather, you may later decide that you would want to restore it to its original condition. This is possible by using teak cleaner products, also available at most marine dealers and internet dealers. After following the instructions for cleaning, you will want to apply a coat of teak oil to prevent the weathering process.

This item measures 30 inches in diameter, 28 inches high, and arrives fully-assembled right from the box.--Mary Park

1 out of 5 stars A chair broke   August 24, 2005

I've had the set a year, barely used it.
The chairs are not sturdy in fact, one broke on me when
someone was sitting in it.

1 out of 5 stars I can't believe they still sell these   August 6, 2005

I bought a set more than a year ago on 'clearance', and I see they're back. I read the reviews and complaints about sturdiness, and bought them anyway since they were cheap. I sat on one chair about 5 times before it literally exploded under my weight. I'm 170 lbs. I still have the second chair and I'm afraid to let anyone use it...the design is just flawed to distribute too much weight to a small piece of hardware and cheap wood...so if you would like to tell your friends the story of how you were almost killed by a chair, this is a fine way to go about it. A more accurate product description would be 'Make your own kindling wood quickly and easily...just sit, wait, and POW! you're ready to pick the wood (and yourself) off the ground. Great fun at parties!'

1 out of 5 stars Absolute garbage!!!   June 22, 2005

Do not buy this substandard piece of dung, unless you just need it for the weekend. I received the set I ordered and the chairs promptly broke. Amazon replaced these and the same thing has happened with new ones. I weigh 170 lbs so this is unnacceptable. The 30 inch folding table is also coming unglued (with almost no use). I don't know about the other Strathmore products but I am totally let down by what I have seen. Amazon should look into what they sell.

These chairs are cheap, unfortunatly they are of poor quality. I weigh 200lbs and the chair did not support me and broke under my weight.

4 out of 5 stars Good value for your money   May 15, 2005

We've had the 30-inch table and four dining chairs for a year now. We placed the set out on the west-facing balcony for 8 months (took them in between November-March)and it has done pretty well in Seattle conditions of occasional rain and cold overnight temperatures. I think they are a great buy for the money and they look much more expensive than they are (of course don't expect teak craftsmanship for $100).

The finish could be better (it looks like it could use another round of sanding, that's why I gave them 4/5) and their unusual dimensions make finding cushions for the chairs impossible. But they are really confortable and an ideal size for a balcony, and the table comes with a closable hole in the middle if you'd like to add an umbrella. Some other buyers said their chairs broke but we did not have any problems like that. My husband weighs 230lb and he has no problem seating for 1-2 hours on these chairs. However, they do look like they are better off with less weight on them. Well, again... don't expect a super A quality product for the price.

All in all it's a good, B+/A- quality set, and you can't beat the value for the money. Just remember to brush them with some teak oil once or twice a year so they can retain their wonderful, warm color.
