5 out of 5 stars Iron saver   May 4, 2008
Using an iron with calcium buildup smearing off on your clothing? Think you have to get a new iron because the hard water build up is clogging all the steam holes in yours? Buy this product. It gets that build up off in seconds. Excellent product.

5 out of 5 stars Works great!   July 22, 2007
After a year of using my nice new T-Fal iron, I had such a build-up of brown gunk that it was unusable. Not sure why that never happened to my cheap old iron, except that I think the T-Fal gets hotter. I usually iron cotton, so I usually put it on its hottest setting.

First I tried baby wipes -- laugh if you want, but in my experience those things are magic. Didn't help in this case though.

Next I tried rubbing alcohol. Still nothing.

So I searched the web, and came across a mention of this product. I went to the nearest Jo-Ann's fabric store and got a 1oz. tube for $5.99.

It worked, though I had so much brown gunk to clean off that it took four repititions, plus more on cotton swabs to clean the steam vents. I used most of the tube. Later, when I'm cleaning it more often like I should, I think a tube would probably last 3 - 5 cleanings.

Be careful when using cotton swabs to clean the steam vents. I was a little too aggressive, and scratched the T-Fal's special smooth finish a little bit. I think the swabs must have picked up some scale from the vents. There were no scratches at all from the main procedure on the flat surface.

BTW, you do want cotton swabs for the steam vents. I tried a corner of the towel first, and it was not effective.

The instructions advise spot cleaner on the towel used for cleaning. I would add, use an old crummy towel. I picked what I thought was an old crummy towel, but my wife intercepted me and produced an even older and crummier one. I haven't washed it yet so I'm not sure if spot cleaner gets it all out, but all that brown gunk is now on the towel, applied with high heat.

I'm very glad to have found this product, and I recommend it to anyone with brown gunk on the ironing surface of their iron.
