1 out of 5 stars Major disappointment!   October 1, 2008

Dyson DC18 Slim All-Floors Cyclone Upright Vacuum Cleaner

Last year when I asked for a new Bissell for Christmas, my husband and daughter insisted that I deserved the best vacuum cleaner available, so they bought me the Dyson DC18. For the first couple of months, I loved it (after I figured out the very vague instructions). Then it started catching on my berber carpet and ripped it up. It took several weeks to even get through to customer service. They told my husband that you're supposed to turn the beater bar off when vacuuming berber. (Thanks for not including that tidbit in your instruction book!)So I turned the beater bar off. Again, it ripped up not only the berber carpet, but a carpet runner in another room. We tried to take the vacuum to a local repair shop, and were told that no local shops are authorized to work on Dysons. Several more conversations with customer service later, we were told to take pictures of the carpet to prove our claim. My husband stated that I had trimmed off the pulled-up loops to avoid further damage. He was then told to have me vacuum the carpet again to CREATE MORE DAMAGE to be photographed. He refused. We were finally given the name of a repair shop in the next state that will take care of the problem. At least that's what they say. They have my Dyson now, and as far as I'm concerned, they can keep it. I'd love to get my money back from Dyson, so I can replace their piece of junk with a cheaper, more reliable vacuum that doesn't ruin my carpet.

5 out of 5 stars Best Vaccum I've ever used...   September 22, 2008
I was a bit skeptical, because of all the hype. I was using my old vacuum 3xs per week with very little dust being collected and here I think, it's just so clean...right? Well my vac broke and I had my eye on this dyson for while. Once I brought it home, I used it and I got things out of my cartpets as if I had never once vacuumed my home. I love it and if something on it breaks (which hasn't) I will certainly have it repaired and use it till it dissentigrates.. I love it!! (Great for allergies)

2 out of 5 stars Power button broke already   September 20, 2008
I bought the Dyson DC18 in April, 2007. I only used it maybe half a dozen times. Last Sunday, the power button broke. When I press down on it, the power comes on. When I remove my finger, the power goes off. I had to sent it off for repair. This is disappointing for a vacuum cleaner that cost $469.99. I had an inexpensive Kenmore that lasted over ten years without servicing. And the Kenmore will probably last another ten years without servicing.

4 out of 5 stars Amazing Vacuum!   September 19, 2008

I absolutely love this vacuum. It is small, lightweight, and relatively quiet (at least compared to my old vacuum). The only two complaints I have is that it is sometimes difficult to turn off (you have to hit the button in a certain way) and it can be hard to set the vacuum in "stand up mode" because the latch doesn't always catch. Minor inconveniences, but not enough to deter me from recommending this vacuum to everyone.

5 out of 5 stars Dyson is the best on the market   September 18, 2008
I have owned the Dyson DC04 full size vacuum for almost 5 years and love it. However, I was looking for something a little smaller and lighter weight. So, I bought this Dyson DC18 Slim.

The Slim is much easier to push on thick carpet. Plus, it has a roller ball which makes it easier to maneuver. Compared to the DC04, the Slim has a lower profile so I can get under a few things that I could not with the bigger vacuum. I also like the shorter head because I can get into more narrow places.

Because the Slim is smaller and lighter I wondered if it had as much power, so I put it to the test. I vacuumed with my big Dyson then immediately vacuumed the same area with the Slim. I was amazed at how much dust, dirt and pet hair the Slim still got.

Advantages of each:
Wider brush head to get the job done quicker, advantage goes to the larger Dyson.
Lighter and more maneuverable, advantage goes to Slim.
Suction power, advantage goes to larger Dyson, but only by a slight margin.

Bottom line: Both vacuums are powerful and no bags to buy. And, I would recommend either one. However, if you need something a little easier to push, then get the Slim.
