Product Description
Egg Rite Perfect Egg Timer, Changes Color As The Egg Cooks, Perfect Eggs Every Time, Carded.

Amazon.com Review
From the "What will they think of next?" department, this 21st-century egg timer takes the guesswork out of cooking eggs. Placed in a pan with eggs, its internal sensor reacts to heat just as the eggs do. It's like being able to peer inside a cooking egg to see what's happening. The timer's red face is calibrated to indicate soft, medium, and hard--and stages in between. As the timer heats up, in precise synchronization with the eggs, its face darkens from the outer edge inward, displaying the eggs' current status on the calibrated gauge. Because the timer heats in step with the eggs, it automatically adjusts for the amount of water and number of eggs in the pan--even the altitude at which the eggs are being cooked. What a concept! --Fred Brack

5 out of 5 stars Fool-proof boiled eggs   May 25, 2008
The Norpro Egg Rite Egg Timer is amazingly simple and accurate. Just toss it in the dishwasher when you're done and its ready for its next use. It doesn't get any better than this.

2 out of 5 stars chemical odor too strong to use   April 21, 2008

I own this product, but I did not buy it on Amazon. I still wanted to review this product because of the problem I have with it. This item gives off such a bad smell that the first time I used it, it made me almost ill. It smells like melting fiberglass or something similar, which seems very wrong. Foreign chemicals are not something I want to eat. And if you think it doesn't matter because your food is inside an egg shell, you are probably unaware that egg shells are porous, and so I believe that a chemical solvent that vaporizes so easily could also become dissolved in the cooking water and get by the egg membrane inside the shell. I even tried boiling the plastic egg again the next day in plain water with no real eggs, and the same smell eminates from it. So I wasted my money . PS I gave this item 2 stars because it actually cooked the eggs perfectly, but for the reasons given above I threw them away . Several tried and true ways to perfecty cook soft and hard cooked eggs can easily be found online.

5 out of 5 stars Science is strange, but AWESOME!   April 12, 2008
I don't know HOW this works, but I also don't really CARE - the point is that it DOES work!! I have boiled anywhere from 2 to 8 eggs at a time with this little gadget, and my eggs always come out PERFECTLY! I think all you need to worry about is what the markings mean to YOU (for example, turns out my perfect soft-boiled egg - firm white, runny yolk - lies on the line halfway between the soft and medium lines). Buy it, it's FUN and PRACTICAL!

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite things!   April 4, 2008
I've been using this for years and it's amazingly accurate. It's magic. So cheap and yet so useful! I've never smelled burning acrylic, as another reviewer said. Just delicious, perfect little soft boiled eggs. I give it to all my friends. Along with an egg decapitator.

5 out of 5 stars Egg-cellent!   March 23, 2008
I LOVE this product!! I found it at Bed Bath & Beyond for about $5 which is rather inexpensive. I have always had a difficult time getting my eggs just right but this small, inexpensive gadget does the trick!!!

I simply put my fresh from the fridge eggs into a pot, cover them with cold water(about an inch over tops of eggs), put the 'timer' in the water with the eggs and put on stove. I set heat to high and wait for the eggs to boil, once they start boiling I keep an eye on the timer. Peering over a pot of water is not that hard and the timer is not difficult to view as the redish orange changes to a dark purpleish/blue. If all you're doing is hard boiling then you're just waiting for the ENTIRE 'timer' surface to turn that dark purplish/blue color. Once that happens, I dump the boiling water out and run my eggs under cold water and let them sit until cooled.

Since using this I haven't had those nasty green or dark green rings around the yolks, instead the yolks are light and fluffy!!! I used this product back to back for boiling 6 dozen Easter Eggs(soaking the timer in cold water until normal color returns) without issues.

The timer (for me) does NOT have an odor, it has not fallen apart, in the future if it should fall apart it's cheap enough to replace as it does the job every time.
