Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
The history of flat bread goes back centuries and various cultures have created their own distinct variations on this theme. Experiencing warm, fresh flat bread, whether it's a soft tortilla, an Indian chapati, or a Chinese moo shoo, offers a very primal satisfaction. This appliance allows you to make your own flat bread very simply and easily, with a minimum of fuss, and a maximum of pleasure.

Amazon.com Review
Built for power, speed, control, and ease, this 1000-watt appliance flattens and bakes 10-inch tortilla wraps, pitas, chapati, roti, and other flatbreads. Key to its performance are heavyweight die-cast aluminum top and bottom cooking plates that quickly and uniformly distribute heat so there are no hot spots to scorch breads. The plates are coated with nonstick material for easy release and simple wipe-clean convenience. An automatic temperature control takes the guesswork out of cooking, and a light signals when the flatbread maker has been heated to the proper temperature. A cord wrap reduces clutter, and the appliance can stand on end for storage. --Fred Brack

4 out of 5 stars Worked very well for me   July 4, 2008
Last night I was trying to make corn tortillas by hand for the first time. I've made tons of flour tortillas, but the difference is like night and day. I ended up just giving up because the dough was sticking to everything and I couldn't even roll it flat. I put the dough away to try out the new press and made some flour tortillas instead.

I got the press about an hour ago, and just finished making about 10 gorgeous, perfectly flat corn tortillas. They taste pretty good, too. Take that, corn tortillas!

You definitely need to add a little more water than seems "right" for the mix. I added a bit of water and some oil as well because they were sticking to the top plate. They peeled off easily with a spatula and it didn't cause problems, but I get the feeling that's not normal.

5 out of 5 stars Makes amazingly thin roti/tortillas quickly without sticking   July 3, 2008
I have used another tortilla maker before this and it had only one hot plate and the tortillas used to stick to one of its place. Making tortillas was a test of patience with a thick and nonuniform thickness tortillas coming out after 45 seconds to 1 minute of hard work. With this tortilla maker it only takes 5 seconds and a roti/tortillas as thin as a professional can make comes out. I'll definitely recommend this product for anyone.

4 out of 5 stars Does the work. Makes decent chapatis.   July 2, 2008
Is a great product for the price. Does the Chapati / roti in a fairly consistent manner. May not be the best Chapatis you will get out of it, but I would not let best get in the way of better!! I can tell you this much, it certainly speeds up the entire process.. I make 15 chapatis in less than 10 minutes now. Would have given it a 5 star, if it could bake it properly all the way through... it bakes like a tortilla.. and for indian chapatis you need a bit more heat to turn it a little brown... so i transfer it to a heated griddle next and let it turn a bit brown (less than 20 secs).

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!   June 18, 2008
We love homemade tortillas and found this product to have the best reviews. I think some of the negative reviews, however, are due to not using using it correctly and not having the right dough. Yes, you can "blow out" a tortilla, but that is due to pressing it too hard, too fast. I experiemented and found the best tortillas are when you use a mix and add just a little extra water than recommended to make the dough really soft. You have to work fast when making each tortilla. Put the ball of dough off centered on the surface and quickly, but gently, lower the lid and press the handle for just a second. Quickly lift the lid and flip and rotate the tortilla and press again. Repeat this about two more times until you get the size and thickness you want. I prefer to leave the lid open for the final cooking so as to not overcook them. They come out perfect every time. Yes, it does take some experimenting, maybe three or four batches, but you will get the hang of it. It's worth every penney!

4 out of 5 stars Easy to Fail, Easy to succeed, just follow these instructions!   June 15, 2008
I read too much here and other internet searches before starting. I can now see how easy it would be to totally fail if you don't get the right advice first. No NEED to press down hard at ALL. Just mix your dough wet enough to shake easily off a spoon. You shouldn't have to tap the spoon to make the dough fall off. I preffer Masa Harina corn flour, add water, and a shake of oil. mix well. you can let is sit, but not even necessary. Plug the unit in and leave it open while it heats up till the light goes off. Drop a spoon of dough into the middle of the unit. SLOWLY close the lid, do NOT press down hard or steam veins will turn your tortilla into swiss cheese. Just Tap the lid down slowly. If you use the lever arm at all, only put pressure for half second at a time. I found there is no need to even rotate or flip the tortilla at all. Look from the side to see how thick your tortilla is. Don't expect it to be paper thin. When you can open the lid and the tortilla doesn't lift up with the top as you lift, then open and remove your tortilla. You may want to fry it in a pan a bit more? They are wonderfull to eat right out of the unit. It is amazing that they taste just like they should right out of the unit. If your first few blow apart, just cook them crisp and eat them as corn chips. The first time you try, just keep adding water till you get good results. I wish they could make one that has lots of small holes in the plates that could let the steam esape more easily, but I don't know if that is even possible. Just take your time in flattening tortillas out. you could also not plug the unit in and just use it to PRESS dough that is less watery and then fry them in a second step. enjoy.
