Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Too much money to be disappointed   June 16, 2008
I am disappointed in the Le Creuset round 7 1/4 qt french oven. It spewed water from under the lid the entire time while cooking a chicken stew and the pot was only little over half full. I certainly expected more from such an expensive item." I should not have to constantly wipe water from a dripping lid on a pot that cost this much. I had to stay close by the entire time because of this. The pot is sturdy, easy to clean and looks good but this problem took all the fun out of using it. This is my first piece of Le Creuset cookware and it may well be my last.

This is a quality product. It is an expensive Dutch Oven but my feeling is that it is one of the highest quality Dutch Ovens available.

5 out of 5 stars Le Creuset is the absolute best   December 11, 2007

I have this french oven in the 5 quart size. It makes an excellent beef bourguignon. One pot cooking - brown the meat in the pot - deglaze with wine and then put it in the oven where it performs admirably as a braiser at 325 degrees. Imagine my great fortune when I was trolling at Marshalls and found this same cobalt blue 7 1/4 quart Le Creuset "seconds" for $139! I was ecstatic! Amazon's price is good, but $139 is better. If you don't mind some VERY minor imperfections, you can sometimes find excellent cookware at TJ Maxx or Marshalls. Check there first if these stores are in your area.

5 out of 5 stars More Blue Heaven (Cobalt of course)   May 31, 2007

My main concern with this Le Creuset 7 1/4 qt Round French Oven purchase, was that it be significantly larger than the Le Creuset 4 1/4 Qt Soup Pot which I am using as a smaller French Oven among other things. It IS indeed, and I don't have any qualms about it not handling my occasional needs for a large pot that does everything, but still at a very manageable weight, and fits the sink for washing up OK. I can even hold the pot with one hand and the towel in the other..
I really like the gorgeous Cobalt Blue, if you have a Culinaria France book, it's darker than the matt blue cover, and a glossy finish. I'm also glad I stuck with round pots, I think they are stronger, provide more even heating, and also a better fit on the stove top.
I've found that most of the size/weight information listed for Le Creuset products is inaccurate and that reviewers provide a more accurate picture. The 7 1/4 qt French Oven has 5 3/4 inches headroom inside, 1 inch more than the Soup Pot. The inside rim diameter is 11 inches, an additional 1/2 inch. But the bulk of the inside volume difference, French Oven 8 1/4 qt versus Soup Pot 5 qt (pot and lid combined interior volume) is due to the shape difference. The flat base of the French oven is 8 3/4 inches diameter or 3 1/4 inches larger.
By the way I returned my Le Creuset 3 1/2 qt Casserole after I found a chip in the inside lid enamel, and Amazon paid the USPS shipping/insurance and ordered a replacement. The casserole was in a crude looking Le Creuset white cardboard box, not the usual glossy orange box, but I was assured by Le Creuset that it is a package difference only.
If you return something to Amazon don't click on the "UPS pick up" box, it's impractical unless you are at home all day for a 3 business day period.
I'm very pleased with the Le Creuset pots, and also the Amazon customer service, and can now focus on cooking.

P.S. I know these pots are expensive and a small collection can easily cost as much as a desktop PC. At least Le Creuset pots don't need software updates and antivirus software, and they are not going to be obsolete in 5 years.

5 out of 5 stars The Perfect Dutch Oven and a Necessary Cookware to Have in Your Collection   May 14, 2007

Le Creuset is a reputable, high quality brand. This Dutch Oven is made of ceramic-coated cast iron, the benefits and lasting strength of traditional cast iron with the modern convenience of dishwasher, refrigerator, and freezer safe features. It has a naturally smooth surface, even heat distribution, durability, and doesn't absorb odors. It's one of the most versatile cookware you will ever owe. It's microwave, stove top, oven, dishwasher, refrigerator, and freezer safe. Being a generous 7 1/2 quart with a wide surface space, it's ideal for cooking soup that requires you to cook the vegetables or flour first. It has a high tolerance to heat. You can make anything from soup to a pot roast in the oven. Buying this may also eliminate the need to buy a roasting pan, which is great for apartments. It's pricey, but it also comes with a lifetime warranty. Be careful with cheaper versions and knock-offs b/c the coating are known to scrape off and the handles and knob are made of the cheapest plastics that melt off. You have none of these problems with this Dutch Oven. The knob did loosen over time, but a simple screwdriver can correct that. I highly recommend this product!!!
