5 out of 5 stars Perfect   September 17, 2008
This cruet is perfect for drizzling just the right amount of balsamic vinegar over a salad. Not too much, not too little.

I was previously disappointed by a cheap cruet purchased from a high-end gourmet food store. It leaked, badly and made a mess. This little unit is perfect.

It's a few dollars more, but well worth it. Just the right amount of vinegar, every time. I expect this to last me 15 years.

Neat, clean, visually appealing; exactly what I wanted. I'd recommend it to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Best I've Found   July 21, 2008

I purchased this probably about two months ago and I've found it so useful that I'm back here to order another. I had tried other types of bottles for olive oil and they were either too vulnerable to being knocked over (being too tall), or else they dripped, or else I was too often getting too much oil when trying to measure. This absolutely does not drip and for me it pours a nice controlled amount for dressing salads or a few tablespoons to use for frying. If I do want more for a particular recipe, say 1/4 cup or so, I go to the larger bottle in my cupboard that I use to refill this counter-top/table-top cruet. It is not a large cruet. Not having a lot of available counter space I appreciate that I will probably get about two weeks of use out of it, while keeping my main stock of oil in a cooler, darker cupboard. As others have said, the glass is thin, but to me the cruet is attractive and a joy to use. It is definitely easy to pick up, not at all awkward. The lip is a natural barrier that helps secure the cruet in your hand while keeping the oil inside. The bottle has a very stable base. I am ordering a second one for a flavored oil that I also use frequently. (I have a smaller cruet from the same company, a 5 ounce round one, that I use for balsamic vinegar.) ...for those of you wanting something larger, I just noticed there is another Chef's Planet listing in Amazon. It's labelled as "Chef's Planet 413-Glass Cruet - Large". It's actually cheaper than the product reviewed here, but they do not list the actual size! Go figure!? (It's also not Amazon Prime, so with shipping it comes to about the same price as this cruet.)

3 out of 5 stars Be Careful Unpacking   July 16, 2008

I took the small box containing the cruet out of the shipping carton and opened it up. Inside I saw much bubble wrap and pulled the bundle out of the box. Opps! It seems that the stopper was individually wrapped in a small clump of the bubble wrap and placed atop the wrapped cruet. It fell to the tile floor of the kitchen, breaking into about a dozen pieces. Yes, I could have been more cautious, but the stopper could have been packed more carefully, perhaps attached with a small piece of tape to the rest of the bubble wrap. Being wrapped in bubble wrap made it difficult to notice the loose clump of bubble wrap that contained the stopper.

I will probably order another one and edit this review once I actually use the product. For now, a neutral 3 stars. I can say that I saw a review or two that said the oil comes out of the hole in the stopper too slowly. The hole in the stopper is about an eighth of an inch in diameter. Unless there is some issue with air pressure inside the cruet, I would think it would come out fast enough for my use. After all, I'm buying this to better control the amount of oil applied instead of pouring right out of the bottle.

EDIT: I have since ordered and received my second cruet. It seems to work as it should. The glass is rather thin, so I'm careful handling it. A friend has a beautifully painted oil dispenser purchased in Italy. The Chef's Planet cruet is not one you would want to leave out on the kitchen counter as a work of art. Olive oil doesn't leak past the stopper, which is as it should be. I've read that some think the oil comes out too slowly, but I don't find that to be the case. It only holds a cup of oil, so how fast do you need it to come out? For the scientific minded, I timed a half-cup poured in 20 seconds. If you want to quickly pour a cup of oil, why not just use the big bottle of oil that you filled up the cruet with, since you would need to fill up the cruet again anyway?

In summary, the Chef's Planet cruet is highly functional, if rather fragile and plain looking. At it's low price, it gets the job done economically.

4 out of 5 stars Good Oil Thingy   May 20, 2008

It's a very nice looking oil thing.
It's a lot smaller than it looks in the picture.
And as I can attest, the glass is pretty thin. The first one I ordered didn't last even 5 min. out of the box. It was dropped at about 6in. and shattered into a million very sharp pieces.

But it is very nice looking, works as it should and the wife approves.
The dripper thing is kind of slow, but not because of the size of the hole. But it looks like it's having trouble getting air in to equal the pressure.

But whatever!

5 out of 5 stars Great ergonomics, perfect size   April 29, 2008

I just received a pair of these today, and I am very pleasantly surprised by the ease of use. They are designed to allow you to very precisely control the amount of oil dispensed, and you can do it with one hand. You simply place your fingertip on the removable spout and grasp the flask by the neck. This keeps the spout securely in place and makes it very easy to use.

The size is also just right for my usage - holding enough to last me a week or so between refills.
