Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Named after Eileen Gray, the Irish designer and architect who made Paris her home, this carafe featues a handsome patterned stainless steel frame, which also serves to protect the glass. Many avid coffee drinkers swear by the French press method, insisting it results in a more flavorful brew. It's a simple low tech approach: simply put coarsely ground coffee beans in the bottom, pour very hot water in, let it rest for at least 4 minutes, then slowly lower the plunger. The screen traps the grounds and your coffee is ready to serve.

Amazon.com Review
The Eileen coffee press is a tribute to designer Eileen Gray and is built to withstand the rigors and crowds of a cafe in Paris--the city that Gray loved most. Bodum instills quality craftsmanship in this press and the result, according to coffee purists, is a brewing machine that produces a superior taste and aroma to any electric coffeemaker. The secret is that the grounds are able to steep in boiling water for about four minutes before they are pressed with the plunger, producing a richer, full-bodied flavor.

The heat-resistant glass carafe on this Eileen model holds a maximum of 32 ounces or 8 cups of brewed coffee or tea, making it a useful size for all-day-long drinkers. The stainless-steel frame encases the carafe and protects it from breakage while still allowing coffee drinkers to see their rich coffee through the slotted design. The santoprene-coated square-shaped handle provides a firm grip on the press while pouring and the stainless-steel lid and plunger are durable and will hold up to years of brewing. For easy cleaning, the carafe and all its parts go right into the dishwasher. Replacement parts are available from the manufacturer. --Cristina Vaamonde

5 out of 5 stars The Art of Fine Coffee   September 24, 2007
4 out of 4 found this review helpful

If you're ready to try a French press, Bodum's Eileen model is absolutely gorgeous! You can enjoy a fine piece of art and a perfect cup of coffee at the same time.

First, let me say that a press makes fabulous coffee. The principle is simple. Put some freshly ground coffee in the glass beaker; add boiling water straight from the kettle, stir, wait a few minutes, then press the plunger to take all the grounds to the bottom of the carafe. You'll have a hot, rich, lovely brew. The typical drip coffee maker doesn't seem to get the water hot enough to bring out the full flavor of the beans; percolators keep boiling the coffee and can turn bitter; and home versions of espresso machines are very expensive. When you add the boiling water to good coffee in a press, watch the crema start to form and smell the glorious aroma. Perfection!

My only reservation about this model is that the Eileen frame, while absolutely beautiful, doesn't seem to hold the carafe as snugly as the Chambord model. Although the carafe doesn't seem in danger of slipping out of the frame while you're pouring, there is definitely extra room there. I'd also be careful with the plastic knob on top of the plunger. The clean up isn't difficult - everything comes apart and goes into the dishwasher. If something does break, Amazon carries standard Bodum replacement parts.

One more tip, if you want your coffee with milk served hot, just put a glass of milk in the microwave for a couple of minutes. That way can add all the milk you like without making the coffee cold. If you really want to go all the way, check out some of the milk frothers available on Amazon. It's an inexpensive gadget that turns skim and lowfat milk into a decadent, creamy foam.

Ahhhhh....life is good!

2 out of 5 stars Problems   May 13, 2007

I had bought the Eileen 8-cup press in January, it was shipped in February to delivery address. When I opened it (the address is a vacation home in the US, since I live overseas), the pyrex glass was cracked. Amazon was kind enough to replace it, although it out of the 30-day warranty return policy. We received the new one in two days, but it was also cracked when I checked it, without use. We were not able to return it because we had to leave that afternoon. We will only be back on June 15.
It looks nice, in fact beautiful, but it or the packaging does not resist delivery handling procedures.
I wonder if we can get a replacement.

4 out of 5 stars Elegant and brilliant--but with a design flaw   September 18, 2002

Once you have coffee from a "french press" you'll never go back to a drip machine again. The flavor is so rich, so intense, so good that you'll think you're drinking hot chocolate. Of course, there are drawbacks too: unlike a drip machine, a french press doesn't keep the coffee warm for hours (you should only drink fresh coffee anyway) and it's harder to clean. Also, there's no point using a french press unless you use top grade (read, expensive) coffee beans and grind them yourself (...). As for this model specifically, it's gorgeous. If you love good clean modern mid-century design this is the only Bodum model for you. One warning: there is a serious design flaw to the Eileen model and it's the little round rubber piece that you press down to plunge the coffee. After about six months of daily use, it wears thin and a metal screw will break right through the rubber and into the palm of your hand. Ouch!...

5 out of 5 stars Donate, give away, or throw away your electric coffee maker.   November 7, 2001

Using this french press yields an outstanding cup of coffee! Efficient to use, quick and easy clean up, very little extra time or effort from making your morning brew with a drip type maker. This unit is well made, durable and fashionable. Consider purchasing this if you grind your own beans and like strong coffee that is of consistant and high quality. Unless you have or are going to purchase a quality coffee mill, don't buy this or any other french press...you'll likely be disappointed at the results. I recommend the Starbucks Barista Burr Grinder (made by Solis) (...).

The price on this 8-cup model doesn't deviate by more that a couple of bucks amoung retailers, so I bought at Amazon and if I ever need parts, I can buy direct at Bodum's web site. As Bodum doesn't "outdate" their products every couple years like other mfg's, you should have piece of mind knowing that you'll not have to part with your french press if something tragic happens to it.

Enjoy excellent coffee.
