Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
A stylish and elegant addition to your kitchen countertop. Set it in advance ? with just-ground beans, you'll get super fresh coffee. Brews 12 perfect cups every time. Grinding chamber is separate for exceptionally easy cleanup, and you can adjust the safety feature to turn off the coffee maker whenever you like (up to four hours). It has a 1-to-4-cup feature, so you can brew a little at a time, and you can enjoy a cup before it's done brewing--it won't drip. Carafe holds 12 cups and has an ergonomic handle, a dripless spout and a knuckle guard. Gold-tone permanent filter and a charcoal water filter. Model DGB-500. Manufacturer's 3-year limited warranty.

Amazon.com Review
When the aroma of freshly brewed coffee--from freshly ground beans--wafts into your bedroom in the morning, you won't need your alarm clock. Preset this coffeemaker for your desired wake-up time, add coffee beans to the grinder, and in the morning the beans are ground to a medium grind and hot coffee awaits in the glass 12-cup carafe. You can also program the machine to start brewing at the end of a dinner party to avoid having to get up from the table, or to have hot coffee waiting after a brisk winter walk. When making fewer than five cups of coffee, use the 1-to-4-cups setting to improve extraction and heat; coffeemakers without this setting often lack the time to heat up properly, and coffee comes out cooler. A disposable charcoal filter removes chlorine and odors from tap water, improving coffee flavor, and should be changed every few months. Other features include a gold-tone commercial-style filter (or use No. 4 basket-style paper filters); capacity to use preground coffee instead of beans; 30-second Brew Pause, which allows a cup be poured before brewing is complete; and an audible tone to indicate the pot is ready. The grinder removes for easy cleaning, and all removable parts can be washed safely in the upper rack of a dishwasher. The Cuisinart Grind and Brew measures 15 by 8 by 7-1/2 inches, and comes with a three-year warranty. --Ann Bieri

5 out of 5 stars Cuisinart Grind and Brew is an excellent way to start your day   July 24, 2008
Excellent coffeemaker - can't find a thing wrong with it. Would recommend this to anyone. Price is right also. Nothing like a freshly ground cup of coffee each morning.

4 out of 5 stars I like it   July 20, 2008
I saw some pretty bad reviews for this product after I bought it but I like it. Yes, you need to clean the grinder, the filter container and the pot but you would need to clean that on any grinding coffee pot anyway. Yes, the grinder is loud, but aren't all grinders. There isn't a way to control the consistancy of the grounds but they have always been very fine and produced good coffee.
If anything its a bit too fine. I want to buy a permanent filter for it but I am worried the grounds may go through it. Has anyone come across this problem?

2 out of 5 stars Hard to clean, weak coffee   July 7, 2008
The idea of freshly-ground coffee may seem appealing, but this unit does not deliver well. To begin with, the grinding unit is the cheap, rotary-blade type and it produces too course a grind for drip coffee. The result is under-extracted coffee that's too weak. The unit is so poorly designed that the steam from brewing goes straight into the grinding section, leaving a layer of sludge all over it and requiring a thorough cleaning after every use. In fact, at first I thought that the unit deliberately ran water through the grinder! I doubt a dishwasher would be able to clean all of the nooks and crannies in the grinder unit. The whole thing is a pain to clean, with at least six separate parts to wash. Every coffee maker has some non-removable parts that need occasional cleaning, but this one has many more than the typical number of recesses and hidden surfaces that evade a casual wipe. If you insist on a coffee maker with built-in grinder, then buy something else. The only other such coffee maker that I have direct experience with is with the Capresso system, which is an excellent unit, though more expensive.

3 out of 5 stars They just don't last very long...   June 8, 2008
It makes excellent coffee if you use Eight O'clock Columbian roast coffee and brew a full pot every time. BUT...it's he!! to clean, and, if you wash it in the dishwasher, the plastic dries out and cracks. Even if you DON'T wash it in the dishwasher, the plastic breaks--little pieces. SO, too bad it's not made better. It's LOUD, but if you set it to brew coffee in the morning, it's kind of like an alarm clock!

1 out of 5 stars Customer Service Lies!   April 29, 2008
I purchased my first 500 in complete faith of the Cuisinart brand. I have three other kitchen products by that company and they work great. I should have known there was a reason why there are more than 50 negative reviews of this coffee maker.

It is very poorly designed. I have had two go bad in less than three years - the length of the warranty. I will admit that Cuisinart has replaced the machine twice, but the last time was a real hassle.

It is obvious that they know they have a disfunctional product. The lady who answered at customer service asked numerous questions about how I was using the machine, in an overt attempt to place the blame for their poor product on my use habits. When that failed, she tried to tell me the reason why my machine was no longer completing a grind and brew cycle, while spewing most of the water out on the countertop and steaming up the front of the machine, was because the "cleaning cycle" was not being reset by me.

According to her, the coffee maker has a sensor in it that "knows" when I have decided to run a vinegar-water mixture through for decalcification and it is waiting for me to unplug the machine so it can "reset" its cycles. Give me a break. They have obviously given the cs folks a page of BS to read to those who call complaining about this particular device.

Don't bother spending your money on this badly designed hunk of junk. I will use the new one they sent me until it fails - I estimate 4 to 6 months, based on past experience - and then I'll trash it for a better machine.
