Amazon.com Review
Your husband prefers a strong cup of French Roast in the morning, while you prefer to make a pot of green tea for sipping all day long. How to satisfy everyone? This dual brewing system has two independent glass carafes, filter holders, water chambers, and water level indicators so you can simultaneously brew up to 10 cups of coffee on one side and another 10 cups of a different coffee or tea on the other. Other than daily home use, the DuoThek is great for offering both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee or a choice of coffee or tea at dinner parties or in a small office.

Krups' special Deep Brew System employs a unique filtering action to enrich the flavor of ground beans when making coffee. To switch one of the coffeemakers to tea, the coffee filters conveniently swivel to the side so you can attach the tea filter. The controls on this coffeemaker are few and simple. They consist of separate illuminated power switches for each side of the coffeemaker and a button that slows the brewing cycle down for coffee when brewing less than three cups (works on the left side of the coffeemaker only). For tea, the number of cups can be set right on the filter to less than four cups or five or more cups to ensure the correct balance of flavor. Another convenient feature of this unit is its Stop `n' Serve capability, which pauses the brewing for 20 seconds while impatient caffeine drinkers pour a cup during the brewing process. This coffeemaker/tea brewing system uses paper filters and is covered by a limited one-year warranty. --Cristina Vaamonde

Product Description
Here's the coffeemaker that is fully equipped to brew large amounts of coffee and tea for home or office. With the additional coffee filter, up to 20 cups of coffee can be prepared. So, you can have a pot of regular coffee and a pot of flavored, or a pot of decaf, or a pot of tea. Krups Deep Brew technology features special filtering action for maximum flavor without bitterness. Additionally, their special heating and tubing system minimizes calcification and leaves no residual water in the system when brewing is complete.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible engineering for coffee pot   February 25, 2006

I was sorry to see that after ordering two of these duo coffee pots, neither was satisfactory. The coffee filter area will not lock into place, therefore, unless one is extremely careful, your coffee will brew onto your counter top, not into your carafe.

1 out of 5 stars If I could give it zero stars....   June 8, 2005

... I certainly would. I paid $150 for this machine and it worked a few days past warranty and died. When I called Krups, after emailing and getting the response "call us", I was asked to send the receipt to them, which I did via FAX. No response.

I called them back on my won and was told, we are sorry you paid this outrageous sum for a coffeemaker you believed would last you as much as a decade but we're not going to do a thing about it other than keep your money and tell you to ship it to one of our authorized dealers and pay them to have it repaired yourself.

Someone please tell me why I would sink another $100 into ANY Krups product, let alone this one?

I will never again purchase a Krups product, believe me.

3 out of 5 stars Ten Oompa Loompa Cups   March 1, 2005
4 out of 4 found this review helpful

The Krups 464 is a perfectly competent coffeemaker that doesn't offer any surprises, either good or bad -- unless of course you think you are going to get, ahem, ten cups out of each carafe.

CUP SIZE
Portion size varies by culture, but here the "10 cup" designation clearly comes from the department of wishful thinking. In a world of super-size mugs, they are still thinking demitasse.

DESIGN & BUILD
The plastic water well cover is thinner gauge and somewhat softer plastic than is found on the rest of the machine. These qualities make it easier to pop off for cleaning, but don't translate into a "high quality" feel. In fact, the whole appliance is surprisingly light in weight.

The carafes are excellent, and the best thing about the 464. I couldn't get them to dribble even when I tried, which is more than you can say about a lot of coffeemakers when you're just trying to pour properly.

COFFEE QUALITY
Most modern coffee makers (unless calcified or broken) will make a perfectly acceptable cup of coffee, imparting no taste of their own. This is no different. The quality of the coffee you'll pour is thus mostly dependent on the quality of the coffee and water. Note: I use the gold-tone filters which let some very fine grounds through; your experience with paper filters may vary.

DECAF DRINKERS STILL NEED A SIGN
The obvious use for a two carafe device, aside from tea & coffee, is to have one side for regular and the other for decaffeinated. A simple slide-open indicator (universal orange) to indicate which one is decaf would seem a no-brainer, but none is present. Sigh.

CONCLUSION
The 464 is a competent, pleasant coffemaker at a premium price. The style, name, and well designed carafes should make this a buy for many.

1 out of 5 stars Can I please enter negative stars? Bad, unpleasant unit   July 13, 2003

I had high hopes for the DuoThek solving several problems:
1. I like to brew tea, but it's a bit of a hassle.
2. I like to drink brewed coffee and need a nice coffee pot.
3. When we have company, it's nice to be able to brew more than a few cups at a time.

However, this unit suffered from huge design flaws and doesn't meet the excellent quality I've had from all other Krups appliances I've ever owned. The DuoThek, in fact, was purchased (and returned) to replace a Krups espresso/coffeemaker that we've now stuck with, even though we don't use the espresso side at all.

Among the myriad flaws with this unit
* No instructions were included about using the tea brewing attachment
* Illustrations and manual didn't match what was shipped
* Cheap, flimsy plastic parts covered with dust and easy to get dirty
* No -- I repeat! -- no automatic shutoff! We almost destroyed one carafe on the first day because of this basic missing safety feature
* Coffee quality is ok, but not wonderful
* Parts don't fit together well: the swing out filter baskets lock into place on my current Krups; these kind of mush in.

Don't buy it.
