5 out of 5 stars Something that actually works as Advertised   May 15, 2008
Charges batteries in 15 minutes, sure. Surprise, this thing does exactly that! As a heavy user of a Digital Camera, 4 AA batteries at a time, this is a life saver. The ONLY problem is that the specific batteries needed for this are not readily available at local retailers. I have found several sources online however. It is also compact, fits in my case, and plugs directly into an AC source. Also charges AAA batteries. Great item!

5 out of 5 stars Has been excellent   November 9, 2007
Bought this unit back in June 2004 to provide batteries for my Canon S1IS I bought at the same time. It's dual voltage capability and small form factor have served me well for many trips to Europe.

I am still using AA batteries with no issues that I purchased over 3 years ago in 2004. I saw recently that Rayovac is dropping this technology. :-(

I quickly went to my local retailer and purchased five AA 4-packs to bolster my current collection of AA and AAA batteries. Based on my experience so far I should be good for at least the remainder of this decade.

The ability to charge a pair of batteries in 15 minutes has meant that keeping the 4 AA batteries charged takes 30 minutes or less with the 2 slot charger. Takes all the planning out of recharging. Need to use my camera and not used it for a while ... no problem! I can have the 4 batteries charged in 30 minutes or less. Yes the batteries are hot to the touch when the charge is complete (that's why the charger has a built-in fan to cool). But the job is done in 15 minutes. Take another 5 to let them cool on the counter before you put it in your device if that concerns you.

Based on these experiences I cannot give this less than a 5 star rating.

1 out of 5 stars Beware the Rayovac 15 minute batteries and chargers!   August 30, 2007

First of all, if you are looking for the best charger and batteries available, I suggest getting the La Crosse BC-900 charger and the GE/Sanyo Eneloop batteries. The La Crosse charger has multiple modes from refresh to charge, you can adjust the MA charge amount and it accepts AA, AAA and Cs and Ds with the included adapter. It also has proper LCD readouts for EACH battery indicating their condition, charge rate, etc. The Eneloops are amazing because on a full charge they will stay stored for a year and still retain 85% of their charge.

Now, on to the Rayovac. I had the 4-battery charger edition (now apparently no longer on sale at Amazon, hence my review here), and both essentially melted. They generated extraordinary heat during their 15 minute charge cycle; one actually started giving off acrid smoke and set off my fire alarm, the other just warped into oblivion from the heat and gave up. Pure and simple, these should all have been recalled - they clearly posed a hazard. The second problem is with the "15 minute" charge batteries. It sounds super cool - that's why I bought the charger(s) and about 20 batteries. I use twin Nikon flashes that take 4 AAs each, and I have lots of remote controls and stuff... charging a battery in 15 minutes sounded like the answer to a lot of problems. However, of the MANY rechargeable battery systems I have tried (including Radio Shack's own brand), the Rayovac's were BY FAR the worst at holding a workable charge, and in heat generation after charging (they were literally too hot to pick up with bare hands).

Someone else has posted here that the 15 minute Rayovac batteries are about to be removed from production. I don't know if it has anything to do with the problems I experienced, but it this product was a hit, and reliable, then it would seem very odd indeed that they would kill a success.

Do yourself a favor and spend the extra few bucks on the system I mention at the beginning of my review. You will not regret it!

5 out of 5 stars Only regret is not having bought it sooner!   August 15, 2007
This charger with two AAs has saved not only money on buying more alkaline AAs, but saved me in situations where I needed some juice on short notice--I could charge up the batteries to full capacity in 10-15 minutes! The charger is nice and compact with a flip-out plug on the back side, so it's perfect for travel. Highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars No simple Plug and Charge   July 31, 2007

I have had the Rayovac PS 5-B battery charger for about three months, and although it re-charges NiMH batteries in the manner it is supposed to do, getting it to charge isn't as easy as it seems. Every time that I plug the charger in an outlet, I have to shake it several times in order to get charger's internal motor to kick in (the green light at the bottom of the charger isn't an indicator that the charger's working). The other day, I spent five minutes getting the charger to work. If this was a better-made device, all a person would have to do is plug the charger in and wait for the batteries to charge. I hope that Rayovac look into this and fix the problem that afflict this device.
