Does what it is supposed to do July 16, 2008

I can't say that it won't break, but in two months of biweekly use it did not have any problems.
All the batches I have done have perfectly consistent results if I prepare them in the same way. Small variations in protocols usually have negligible effects (e.g., +- 1 hr in "cooking time" and small variations in temperature when "boiling" or adding the starter), but sometimes they do. I am a scientist by training and a Ph.D. in chemistry so I have some idea about what I am talking about. I suspect that the lack of consistency found by some were more a statement about their cooking skills than a statement about the product. It doses exactly what it is supposed to do in a simple and clean way. The breaking of the jars and caps seems to require a remarkable degree of mishandling.
The fact that I use it continuously (that is, I never run out of yogurt) might partially explain the consistency I have found.
I used some dried Yogurt starter at the beginning and followed the instructions on the yogurt maker mostly. It worked.

This Yogurt Maker makes excellent yogurt which is much better (and less expensive) than store bought yogurt.

After having made my own yogurt with a different brand of yogurt maker for over twenty years, I knew what I hoped for in a new yogurt maker. This one looked good, but didn't last for even a year. The first difficulty was the jars included with the maker appeared to be polycarbonate, which contains Bisphenol A, and were unacceptable. I had to find glass jars that could be used instead. The electronic timer became intermittent after about 6 months and stopped working completely soon after that. I sent e-mails and wrote to the company about the problems and they never responded. Don't waste your money.
