5 out of 5 stars Great product!   October 9, 2008
This is the first yogurt maker I've ever owned and I would highly recommend it. I had success the first time I used it! I'm not exactly sure how the timer works because I've never heard it, but I just must be in the other room when it goes off. Since it doesn't have an auto-shut off when it's done, you should definitely set your own timer to let you know when the yogurt's done (you put the lid on with the notch above the number of hours that you want the yogurt to "cook" and the timer is supposed to tell you when that number of hours has passed). They recommend 7 hours for 2% milk, which is what I did and it came out perfect! I used a 6 oz cup of plain Dannon yogurt for the culture base and that worked really well. I highly recommend that you buy this product. It's cheap, easy to use, even easier to clean (dishwash the jars, but not the lids), and makes great yogurt!

5 out of 5 stars Simple and Perfect   September 10, 2008
I love this yogurt maker. It is compact, simple to use, and makes great yogurt. I found absolutely no need for the auto shut off. One less thing to break, in my opinion. The glass containers are very nice. This is one of my best and most useful kitchen gadgets.

4 out of 5 stars can't complain for my 1st yogurt maker   July 20, 2008

PROS: If I knew making yogurt was SO easy (and cheaper than buying from the store), I would have bought a yogurt maker years ago. The yogurt this machine makes tastes great. What I like about this yogurt maker is that the yogurt is prepared in serving size jars. Thus, when the yogurt is done, I put the lids on, stick them in the refrigerator, and they are already in serving size containers for me to pack in my lunch later. I also like that the containers are made of glass and not plastic (since I believe chemicals can leach from the plastic into the yogurt.)
CONS: What I do not like is that if the jar is not sitting upright, the yogurt liquid can leak out. For example, when I pack my lunch and the yogurt jar falls on its side, yogurt juice will leak out. Also, I wish the jar sizes were 8oz in size like the store bought yogurts. The 6oz size does not fully satisfy me and leaves me wanting a little more. I think a nice touch would be to also include a thermometer with the yogurt maker.
[Additional notes not used to determine review rating for product: I ferment the yogurt 24 hours because I am on the Specific Carbohydrate (SCD) Diet, so I like that this maker does NOT have an auto shutoff. Since I want to ferment the yogurt between 100-110 degrees F for 24 hours, I have to use an appliance dimmer on the product to allow me to keep the temp from going higher. I have figured out how to adjust the appliance dimmer setting to maintain the desired temp. Note, from the start of cooking, the middle yogurt jar temp is normally 5-7 degrees warmer than the outside jars.]

5 out of 5 stars lovely yogurt   May 30, 2008

I'm not sure what everyone is going on about the lack of an off switch. Big deal! I just start my yogurt process at 10pm. First boil the milk, then let it cool, add yogurt or starter and put the jars in the incubator at 11pm. At 7am when I wake up, voila, perfect yogurt that Yoplait would kill for. It's also nice NOT to have the off switch for when you may want to let it incubate longer for whatever reason.

I have yet to find anything wrong with this lovely machine. It's small and tucks away nicely into a cupboard/shelf when not in use, and because it's not messy, there's no cleaning required other than rinsing the lid from condensation.

You don't need to use the little jars, either. You can use one large-ish bowl that fits in there. I live alone so I often make a batch of 3 jars at a time and make it a couple of times a week.

I'm also not sure if having thermometers and other contraptions is necessary. I boil the milk and set it aside and in about 30 minutes it's room tempurature. I also add inulin, a prebiotic, to my mixture along with the yogurt or starter. The first time I did it, I added cold yogurt straight out of the fridge and the yogurt still came out perfect.

Yogurt is not an exact science. As long as you add culture to the milk (or soy, I'm going to try almond milk next), you're going to end up with yogurt. No need to be a chemist about it all.

One thing I'll mention: do not be a goof like me and boil the lid (I boil the jars to disinfect). Mine got warped from the heat - which makes you wonder the quality of plastic in the lid. Which was just as well because now I just use a tin foil to cover the jars in the fridge and if I want to take a jar to work, I'll put wax paper (or if you must, cellophane wrap) and then put one of 3 lids that didn't warp to prevent it from spilling.

Who knew yogurt was so simple?!?!?

4 out of 5 stars does what it's supposed to! Except the timer doesn't work   May 14, 2008
I love this yogurt maker, but the timer doesn't work.
It's just a piece of plastic that turns around.
