Amazon.com Review
With a minimum freezing temperature of -4 degrees F, the Simac Gelato Junior takes only about 30 minutes to satisfy your craving for a frozen confection. Plus, the built-in compressor freezer operates continuously, so you can turn out multiple flavors of ice cream while your guests finish their dinner. A 60-minute electronic timer frees you up for other activities, and an automatic safety mechanism sounds a warning beep if the integrated spatula blade gets stuck. A removable 1-quart bowl, transparent lid, and slim ingredient window all simplify operation, and the unit is also useful for crafting frozen drinks and chilled soups. Though not lightweight at 31 pounds, the Gelato Junior is fairly sleek for its class, measuring 11 by 14 by 12-1/4 inches. Simac includes a booklet of tasty ice cream, sorbet, and dessert sauce recipes, as well as an ice cream scoop. --Emily Bedard

5 out of 5 stars happy   October 12, 2008
I am pleased with the Lello 4070 however I wish it scraped the ice cream off the sides a little closer.

5 out of 5 stars LOVE my Lello!! I feel like a Gelato Maestra!   October 9, 2008
I bought the Lello Jr. at the beginning of this summer after returning from our 10th trip to Italy, and deciding that I wanted to try and make gelato. After doing lots of research I settled on the Lello Jr, and I haven't regretted it. I've mastered basic vanilla, Sicilian bittersweet chocolate, crema, fresh peach, and the most fabulous cantaloupe gelato -- so delicious that my boyfriend says it's as good as if not better than what we ate in Italy. I also made David Lebovitz's Candied Bacon Ice Cream last weekend -- AMAZING! All of them are so easy with my Lello. Once I finally figured out the proper recipes for each (some I made up, but I also swear by and highly recommend "The Perfect Scoop" by David Lebovitz to learn the basics as his recipes are beyond compare) the Lello made every easy and the results were beyond my expectations. As I became comfortable with making gelato, I used what I learned from "The Perfect Scoop" and those recipes to help create my own. The Lello is heavy, yes, so I keep it on my kitchen counter, and it's hard to pour add-ins at the end (I don't use the tiny opening; I just stop the machine, pull out the dasher/paddle, add the mix-ins, put the paddle and top back on and start it back up). It also takes longer to make a quart than 30 minutes -- usually closer to an hour for mine. Difficult to clean? No, not even when I overfill the canister and some of the gelato pushes up into the top of the paddle and lid. It all wipes clean very quickly with a damp cloth. Sometimes I wish I'd purchased the larger, Pro model that makes two quarts at a time, but since there are only two of us at home, and the gelato tastes best when it's fresh (either that day or the next), it's probably best I only have the Jr. I did buy an extra canister so I can make two flavors quickly (one canister can still be chilling in the fridge while the other is churning). LOVE the Lello Jr-- HIGHLY recomend it!!

5 out of 5 stars Like it so much we bought a second one!   September 6, 2008
My family bought this machine for me for Mother's Day in '04 for our second home. We actually don't make traditional ice cream much (lots of folks of diets), but I have frozen just about everything else with great success, from fresh fruit (using their simple syrup recipe and a little fresh lemon or lime), to leftover mimosas, to gazpacho for an appetizer on a scorching day. My grown sons and their friends, the little cousins, everyone has made "special desserts." It even prompted the purchase of a pizelle iron, so that we could try making cones, too. Last year they bought me a second Gelato Jr -- for our apartment in the city! It fits on the countertop, it is noisy, but as others have said, less than the dishwasher and not much more than our old air conditioner, and it's just as popular. The machines are a little sensitive -- they work best exactly horizontally and you do need to be careful to place the top exactly or the blade mechanism won't make contact and turn. Some ingredients do take a little longer than suggested. I find the included recipes to be well written, clear, easy to follow and easy to personalize! Definitely worth the money -- comparable output to the much more expensive models.

5 out of 5 stars Wow!! Reap the Benefits of the More Expensive Units at About 1/3 the Cost!! Great Machine To Own!! I Love It!!!   June 14, 2008

This unit is a true blessing!!

I had this machine now for a little over 5 years, and let me tell you that it's a godsend!! I'm so thrilled to have this great unit!! Every conceivable frozen treat can be made with this machine! It STILL cranks out the most beautifully-made luscious ice cream as ever, like it did when I first got it!!

The usual drudgery of struggling with those manual units where you have to hand-crank them until your arms feel like they're about to fall off of you are completely done away with, and so is the messy job involved with clipping ice blocks to small pieces to fit into the ice bucket that surrounds the canister, and storing rock salt which is needed to made the ice colder!!

Gone also, are the tedious problems associated with making room to store those pre-freeze bowls in the freezer for about 8-9 hours that come with the small units that make you pre-freeze the bowl first before making ice cream! These units are ridiculously time-consuming, not to mention being a waste of time!! And if you want to make more than one batch, forget it! You'll have to pre-freeze the bowl again for another 8 - 9 hours to make more!!

This unit is simplicity in and of itself! You just turn on the main (amber) switch located at the back of the machine. This starts the compressor and the internal condenser cooling fan. While the freezing chamber is getting cold, just pour your pre-made pre-chilled mixture into the removable bowl or bucket, which it looks like a little boy's sand bucket. Lower the bucket into the chamber, fit the churn motor head with the attached paddle, set the churning time, press the start button, and away you go!!

You're on your way to making some of the best ice cream that you ever tasted!!

This unit is amazing! It has built-in safety features which help prevent the churn motor from burning out, as well as audible sound(beeps) to alert you when the timer is about to time out, or when the ice cream has hardened and the churn motor has overheated and the safety thermostat is about to kick in.

Great for making those luscious summertime treats that you and the kids enjoy! Let the kids get in on the action and fun, also. They'll just LOVE the fun and joy of making ice cream and watching the machine at work!!

I bought 3 extra little buckets for those times when I make two or three batches. Eliminates having to wash and reuse the same one all the time! Just leave the main switch on until you are done with all of the batches.

Even though this unit's main cabinet is plastic, it is very strong, sturdy and durable! It costs far less than the stainless steel bodies on the higher-priced units, but it does just as good a job making those luscious frozen treats for you and the kids to enjoy any time of the year!! I love it!!

This machine, even though it is sold under different model numbers or company names, is made in Italy by Lello Appliances Corporation. It is principally the same machine reguardless of who's name is on it. I've even seen it with a stainless steel body as well!!

But you won't go wrong. I've had it for 5 years, and I can tell you that making ice cream now has never been easier or better! It's a doll!! Far better than the electric ice-&-salt-using hissing squeaking monster it replaced!!
