Spode blue and white earthenware is among the most collectable pottery in the world. In continuous production since 1816, Blue Italian is undoubtedly one of the all-time classic tableware patterns and was created shortly after Josiah Spode's perfection of blue under-glaze printing. The central scene is thought to be ruins in Italy and the elegant integration of the figures into the scene demonstrates the exceptional engraving techniques at Spode. Exquisitely framed by an 18th century Chinese border, the central scene of Italian ruins may have been inspired by a late-17th century pen and wash drawing. The unmatched artistry of the pattern still requires the most skilled hand engraving to create its remarkable sense of space and atmosphere.To this day, Blue Italian still originates from a hand engraved copper-plate using Josiah Spode's transfer printing method at his original factory site in Stoke-on-Trent, England. Continuously produced in England since 1816, the Blue Italian pattern from Spode will easily find a home on a casual or more formal table. Utilizing an underglaze printing process created by Josiah Spode and still employed today, varying shades of blue and white make up the lovely design, adding a 3-dimensional depth to each piece.

Measuring 6-1/4 by 13-1/4 inches, this versatile Blue Italian rectangular tray can be used to serve tea sandwiches, canapés, pastries, or cheese and crackers. Based upon a late 17th Century drawing, the central design depicts classic Italian ruins in a pastoral setting, while an 18th Century Chinese-inspired floral motif decorates the outer edge of the plate and the two small handles. Crafted from Spode's high-quality earthenware, known as Imperialware, the tray can safely be placed in the microwave or dishwasher. --Lea Werbel

Got this for my sister-in-law from her wish list. It looked a little small to me but she loved it. Check the dimensions for yourself before you order. I was expecting a functional tray.
