Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Mario Batali's sturdy, extra-large panini press will be the talk of the table. High grill ridges and a heavy press cook perfect panini every time, served up with fresh, delicious grill marks. Constructed of durable cast iron, it features a black matte-enameled interior that does not require seasoning. Rather, this grill uses the natural oils created while cooking to create a smooth, chemical-free nonstick surface. Limited lifetime warranty.

1 out of 5 stars Don't buy it, too heavy to return   May 31, 2008
1 out of 3 found this review helpful

I ended up giving it away to a friend of mine. I just kept the lid which makes the marks and is heavy enough to make panninis. It's too heavy to cook, clean, or store. It's really and eyesore color as well. I got the "persimmon" but who are they kidding, it's orange and who has an orange kitchen. Even if you were going to leave it on your stovetop, you'd have to constant move it around and it's too heavy to do that. There are so many other grill and presses out there, don't get this one. Even if you could return it, it's like 20lbs w/ box and everything.

1 out of 5 stars Unacceptable product   March 16, 2008

Sandwich bread was literally welded to the bottom of the grill at medium low heat. The bottom of my sandwich could not be removed from the utensil. The strange enamelled matte finish, which is not to be seasoned, is unsuitable for its intended purpose. Used once and thrown out. The product is attractive but functionally worthless and is rated "unacceptable."

4 out of 5 stars great for steaks, vegtables and fish   February 13, 2008

I use this pan for steaks, fish and vegtables. Steaks on this pan at medium high heat are incredible. The pan is very heavy and it holds heat well. Try grilling asparagus on this, toss in some fresh rosemary at the end.

Downside: The pan is quite large, it's very heavy and it's not easy to clean.

My 18yo son who is learning to cook has this on his "must have list", (along with my plasma tv)

This was a real disappointment. Instructions say 'ready to use without curing'...but 1st sandwich was hard to remove... small amount of cheese got onto bottom and it was impossible to remove. Soaked in soapy water and scrubbed endlessly, pieces of cheese lift and then reaffix onto other spots requiring similar effort to remove...then it migrated again! Have never seen anything like it! Someone needs to get Alton Brown to do a chemical analysis of the surface to figure out what's happening. We'll give it a second chance, but without better results "en la basura", a sad lesson in using untested celebrity products.

5 out of 5 stars Great Pan   January 2, 2008

I've owned this pan for about 3 months now. It works great, once you learn some tricks. First, toast the bread, if using sliced bread. Toasting dries the bread surface and eliminates sticking. You can still brush on a little olive oil for the taste, but you won't need it.
Start with low heat settings and let the pan heat up for 2-3 min. Higher heat settings will burn the bread before you heat the inside.

I found that I still need to flip the sandwiches to brown the top, but the press part is plenty heavy to give the traditional flatness. The whole pan is quite heavy, but this is normal for cast iron.
