I really, really wanted to love this product. I think OXO makes great stuff and summertime is when I like to make chop salads of all sorts. Well, the concept is just ducky but the application leaves a lot to be desired. The spacing of the dual blades is too wide, requiring many more passes than I thought strictly necessary to achieve a relatively uniform chopping. After 5-7 minutes for a reasonably small salad, my arm and wrist were fatigued and my salad was overchopped - except where overly large bits remained :(

Works great, but expensive July 20, 2008
Upon unpacking this item you get a nice solid salad bowl and what looks like a double pizza cutter. It does work nicely, as the handle is ergonomically shaped and the blades cut well. Makes easy work of the chopping once you have the leaves in the bowl. I think some suggestions to make this item a little more practical would be to include a lid that fit securely over the top of the bowl for storage/refrigeration as well as a separate little booklet of chopped salad recipes. There are some included in the little book that comes with this item, but a few more would make it seem like a little better bargain for your money. For those of you who have this already, [...].

To be honest, our favorite part of this tool is the bowl itself, which is quite large, durable, and looks nice enough to bring to a casual party filled with whatever you want. As for the chopping action itself, you'll need to make up your mind on the trade-offs. It does in fact chop, as it says. But we did have a problem with bruising and wilting of leaves and still preferred the torn method of preparation. So we don't use it for chopping many greens. It does chop peppers, but I'm not sure it's a big time-saver as you still have to de-seed them beforehand anyway and it doesn't take but a few seconds to chop them with a knife. It does a nice job on other items, such as onions and nuts. Not so great, as one would expect, on softer items such as tomatoes. So you're left with a relatively limited usage, at least from our personal preferences. As mentioned, the bowl is quite big, so if you don't have the space to make it easily accessible, I'm guessing the whole thing will gather dust somewhere in the deep recesses of your storage. But if you do have the space, it's convenient enough often enough (though just barely) to warrant keeping it around. Especially for that bowl. And though neither of us have problems handling a knife, even people who prefer torn lettuce or aren't looking to save much time but who have problems with pain in their hands/joints would probably find this much easier due to its configuration than chopping the old-fashioned way. So a solid three for us, but maybe a two for you if you lack space or just use greens in your salads or a four if you have space, don't mind some bruising, and make a lot of salads with ingredients that fit the structural criteria to make this really fly--not too soft (tomatoes), not too hard (carrots) but somewhere in between (onions, cukes, nuts)

I like that when you chop salad in this bowl, it effectively reduces the volume, so you can eat your greens faster and easier. What was not so great was that the roller is not as sharp as I would like, and it somewhat crushes things instead of cutting them. I will try to sharper it myself, but it really should come sharper on it's own. The bowl itself is thick, sturdy and large.

t's a bowl; it's a cutter; it's way overpriced. July 9, 2008
Good size bowl but I was expecting the chopper to be a little easier to use and less time consuming. I still find it easier to cut the items I want in my salad with a knife and put them in the bowl. One reviewer said the chopper looks like a double pizza cutter; that's exactly how I'd describe it. The salad bowl works great and can be used for many other purposes other than just salads. We've been eating salads most every night and most of the items I put in the salad don't chop up well using the chopper, like olives, pickles, and hard boiled eggs. But I will definitely use the salad bowl.
