Designed in 1968, Ultima Thule glassware epitomizes the artistic genius and master craftsmanship of Finnish glass artist Tapio Wirkkala. Each glistening tumbler or bowl resembles textured ice, complete with "drips" on the bottom that form legs. In fact, each piece is crafted with a wooden mold during the glass-blowing process in order to obtain its organic look and individualized markings. The collection includes footed wine goblets; cocktail or juice tumblers; and flat bowls with short vertical rims that may be used for everything from hot soup to ice cream. There's even an extra-wide bowl for centerpiece display, and a pitcher with an icy-looking lip. Iittala makes these works of art in Finland; all are durable enough for everyday use and are safe for dishwasher cleaning.
