Not Just for Kids Anymore August 15, 2008
Growing up popsicles were simple affairs. Since my favorite color was and still is purple I would only eat grape popsicles. This meant our freezer was usually well stocked with cherry, lime, and orange until I got hard up enough to eat the other flavors. If I ever made homemade ice pops I did so covertly using Mountain Dew (I'm losing my mind a little just thinking about this) and an ice cube tray studded with toothpicks. As I've mentioned before I was a kitchen sneak. Occasionally I also attempted to recreate pudding pops in pastel Dixie cups but they never tasted as good as the ones Bill Cosby urged us to beg our moms for during Saturday morning cartoons. Unfortunately this led me to really not care for traditional popsicles at all.

But then I discovered Krystina Castella's new book: Pops! Icy Treats for Everyone (published by Quirk Books) and simply put I'm absolutely blown away by the fantastic liberties she has taken with what is generally considered by the vast majority of families as a frozen grape juice concoction topped off with a craft stick. Please believe me when I say that you have never seen popsicles like this before. These pops are multi-layered, full of complex flavors, and truly unique ingredient blends.

The table of contents includes sections on: Healthy Energy Pops, Fruit Juice Pops, Soda Fountain Pops, Cream and Pudding Pops, Coffee and Tea Pops, and Cocktail Pops. The "Cocktail Pops" section in particular caught my eye since it includes a Mojito Pop and I've been on a huge mojito kick lately. Other pops I can't wait to test out include Sweet Martini Pops, Thai Iced Coffee Pops, and Sugar Pumpkin Pops. I don't know about you, but Summer just got about twenty times more exciting for me! In the introduction to the cookbook Krystina mentions the term "kidults" and how popsicles fit right into this cupcake buying, toy loving, crafty "grown-up" lifestyle. I couldn't agree more.

Putting the chic in icy treats! August 14, 2008

I bought this book so I could place it on my coffee table to sit pretty. Instead, it's constantly in the kitchen inspiring me to make quick and easy summer treats! The photography is beautiful but the recipes are even better!

The author, Krystina Castella, successfully brings chic to icy pops! She incorporates a wild yet intriguing concoction of fresh fruits and at times, exotic foods to create delectable cool snacks. With titles like "Basmati Rice Pudding" and "Sweet Martini", the pops in this book certainly aren't the boring Popsicles we've grown up with.

For those of us who are kitchen-challenged, following the recipes to the letter will yield yummy frozen treats! For those who are a bit more adept in the culinary arts, use the book as a loose guide and have some fun experimenting and exploring your own creations.

I've already bought a few more copies, wrapped them up in wax paper with some cotton string from the kitchen for the perfect all occasion gift!

Perfect Summertime Book - A Treat in Itself! July 27, 2008

'Pops! Icy Treats for Everyone' is exactly what you want in a summertime book - creative, fun and accessible. With recipes for frozen treats like Kiwi & Strawberry Pops (with whole slices of kiwi frozen inside), Blueberry Cheesecake Pops, Sugar Pumpkin Pops and Mimosa Pops, there is an abundance of unique, exciting recipes in this book. I was immediately drawn to the Coconut Pops and Peach Cream Pops (made with peach nectar and slices of fruit). Both were satisfying after a long day at work, sitting out on my patio and enjoying a bit of frozen goodness. The coconut pops rivaled Edy's, which are my favorite brand of `freezer section' coconut popsicles. As for the peach cream pops - there was a lot of promise there. These pops were created by layering the nectar/fruit mix with a cream mix made with yogurt and milk. The top layer, with the nectar, was amazing. However, the bottom layer of "peach cream" just wasn't sweet enough. Next time I make these I'll be adding sugar or some other sweetener to the cream mixture. That, I think, would be perfection. All of the recipes are imaginative and easy to follow. Each one is introduced by a short story from the author on the top of the page, and most are accompanied by a mouth watering photo. I especially loved how the author included variations for every recipe. For instance, the recipe for Cookie Dough Pops lists 5 variations, along with instructions, at the bottom of the page. These variations include: Waffles & Ice Cream Pops, Peanut Butter Cookie Pops, Ginger Snap Pops, S'Mores Ice Cream Pops and Cookies & Cream Pops.

Overall this is an excellent book that's certain to add a bit of refreshing fun to your kitchen. You'll learn how to create a variety of tasty treats while also learning how to give your popsicles a more exotic look: layering colors, embedding fresh fruit, and even making your own molds. Have fun!

Perfection July 8, 2008
Just when you thought summer couldn't get any better.... Pops! is such a treat for those hot summer days and I really love the fact that 1) the photos are so great, and 2) the technical creativity that goes into every recipe. There aren't many books out there that give you the actual steps to creating your own popsicle molds but Pops! does it with such ease and simplicity that adults and children alike will enjoy it.

something for everyone June 24, 2008
My nieces are making pops to sell instead of lemonade this summer so I got them this book. They were so excited to see all the creative ideas and imagining all the money they're going to make! This book is going to help keep them busy and creative all summer for which my sister is very grateful.
