Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.com Review
Blessed with a carafe that pours without dripping, a water filter, and touchpad electronic controls, this coffeemaker provides safety, convenience, and a host of options for brewing 12 5-ounce cups at once. The carafe is calibrated for both filling the reservoir properly and for judging the amount of brewed coffee and the water filter improves taste by reducing chlorine. The control panel provides a 24-hour clock/timer for brewing "wake-up" coffee and permits the nonstick warming plate's temperature to be set as desired.

Other features include a calibrated window on each side for monitoring the water reservoir's level, a hinged cover that flips back to reveal both reservoir and coffee filter, and cord storage. The carafe has a comfortable handle and a guard to protect the knuckles. The coffeemaker measures 7-3/4 inches wide, 12-1/2 inches high, and 10-1/4 inches deep. --Fred Brack

5 out of 5 stars Cost effective carafe replacement   July 25, 2008
We really like this coffee maker, but broke the carafe in the one we had. After some research, we found that ordering a new unit from Amazon was less expensive than a replacement carafe.

4 out of 5 stars coffee pot   July 21, 2008
Works well no real compaints, though the coffee could be a bit warmer on the burner

3 out of 5 stars Unimpressed. Should have gotten another Krups.   July 21, 2008
I owned a Krups coffee maker for 7 years, the kind with the round, 10 cup aroma carafe. You can't find that coffee maker anymore, but you can still find the carafe. The water reservoir was getting pretty funky, and the clock finally burned out so I could not program it anymore. It made a damn good cup of coffee, though. I was going to buy another Krups, but after reading up on this one, and because it is a Consumer Reports best buy, I decided to get it.

I'm not that impressed, and regret not getting another Krups.

The carafe is sturdy, has a nice pour, but otherwise the Krups design is better. The Krups carafe is round, and just as sturdy with a good pour. When I pour the first cup of this new one tons of condensation pour off the lid first watering down that first cup of coffee. That never happened with the Krups. I never had condensation on the lid because the round design prevented that.

The filter is your basic, round filter. Coming off of a cone filter, I have to say I like the cone filter much better. It makes stronger coffee with fewer grounds. I have to use much more grounds to get close to the same flavor I was getting from the Krups #4 cone. I'm going through ground coffee much faster, now.

Programming works like it should. No surprise or disappointment, here, though the clock is BRIGHT.

Here is the BIG disappointment. The Krups could be programmed to keep the coffee warm for up to 5 hours, then the warmer plate would shut off. 5 hours is excessive, but it was nice because I work from home and drink coffee the entire morning. It's also nice because my wife or I could get up at 5 and have 2 mugs of coffee before work, and then the other could get up at 7:30 or 8 and have fresh tasting, hot coffee from the same pot. NOT ANYMORE! The warmer plate is limited to 2 hours, and 2 hours only. You can not set it to stay on longer or shorter. If you turn the maker back on after it shuts off, it really burns the coffee. Solution? Get a separate carafe or make a new pot. What a waste. So, even though I saved $20 compared to buying another Krups, now I'll probably spend another $20 for a carafe.

If keeping the coffee hot for more than 2 hours is a big deal, spend a little more money and get the coffee maker with the thermal carafe.

Overall, the Krups was a much better value, makes much better coffee, and has better features. It lasted 7 years, made great coffee, and kept the coffee tasting fresh and hot for up to 5 hours. Also, after 2 years I just stopped buying replacement water filters and went "water filterless". It still worked great.

I will probably not have this coffee maker for that long, but I am so disappointed I can't get the round, aroma Krups anymore.

1 out of 5 stars Worst Coffeemaker ever!   July 19, 2008
DO NOT BUY THIS MACHINE!! I have never written a review on any product... but I feel so strongly about this that I felt the need to warn others. This is the worst coffeemaker I have ever owned. I have gone through two of these machines in the past year. The first one I owned simply stopped working after about 3 months. I called Black and Decker and they agreed to replace it... if I paid for shipping and handling. They assured me this was not typical. However, now on coffeemaker number two, I came downstairs to grab coffee before leaving for work and this one has simply stopped working as well. Will not brew coffee by turning it on manually or setting the timer. Save yourself the headaches and do not buy this machine!

4 out of 5 stars Carafe leak!   July 10, 2008
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

Black & Decker used to be a USA company that made good power tools. Sometime in the '80s (I think) they where bought by Fox Int./? and they started marketing home appliances with the Black & Decker name and made in China.
Seems to make good coffee and faster than other coffeemakers that I have owned. The hot plate under the carafe keeps the coffee good and hot.
In an effort to make the price as low as possible they figured a way to make the Carafe cheaper. Instead of forming the pouring lip on the Carafe out of glass (as all other Carafes that I have ever seen) they made the Carafe out of 2 pieces. One part is the glass bowl and the other is the black plastic handle and the top lip of the Carafe with the pouring lip. Somehow they try to seal the two parts together to make a the Carafe assembly. Well here is where things go wrong. Glass and plastic have a different expansion rate and so they have a hard time getting the two to seal, and that is why, I think, the Carafe leaks.
I called B & D /Fox /? and told them that the Carafe leaked and was told that the Carafe was on "back order" and I would get the replacement in about 4 weeks, and I did. This tells me that many other people are having the same (leaking) problem. They wouldn't confirm that. So far no leaks with the replacement Carafe.
My only other comment about the Coffeemaker is the red LED display for the clock is very very bright. It's so bright that you can use it for a night light!!
Would I buy it again, yes.
