1 out of 5 stars OXO's Horrible Failure   August 17, 2008
Even on my small stove, the handle is too hot to touch and I have to wrap my hand in a dish towel. When making the 18 inch move from the burner to my cup, the weight of a half kettle worth of water will cause the spout/handle contraption to violently wobble open and shut, often splashing boiling water on all sorts of unsuspecting surfaces - my hands, the cat at my feet (MRAOW!), my husband. OXO failed completely by adding a "clever" lever to one of the more dangerous kitchen devices, as if they forgot tea kettles house scalding water.

If you feel comfortable jerking the handle up and down to open the spout while holding nearly 4 pounds of flesh-melting water, then by all means, pick up the Pick Me Up.

5 out of 5 stars I love this kettle   August 9, 2008
I was hesitant to buy it online, because the previous one we'd bought didn't open the way the first one did. You are supposed to be able to open the spout just by tilting it a little bit, which is great if you heat water for yourself, then want to refill it for someone else. But I did it, and it works fine. I'm very happy.

1 out of 5 stars Melted!!   April 3, 2008
The plastic whistle and spout cover MELTED during regular use. I put the kettle on to boil and it never whistled, so I went to check it and the whole whistle contraption had melted and was dripping down the teapot!! I emailed the company and they promised to send me another one but I am very dubious about using it, why would a new one be any different? But we'll see...at least they said they would replace it.

3 out of 5 stars they'll replace it if it breaks   March 30, 2008

We bought one of these locally last May, and used it once or twice a day until the plastic ring holding the whistler in place suddenly broke in two a few weeks ago. We thought maybe the cleaning lady had dropped it, until we went shopping for another one and read the reviews and complaints here. We couldn't find another kettle we liked, so I called Oxo and told them what happened, and they immediately said they'd ship us a new one. They also asked us to send this one back (at their expense); the marketing research department is apparently trying to figure out what's causing them to break like that; may have been a bad batch, who knows?

FWIW, we have a ceramic cooktop, so no flames to melt it. The kettle heated up quickly, sometimes quickly enough that we'd find ourselves running back into the kitchen a few minutes later to get it off the stove because the whistle is simply ear-piercing (loudest tea kettle whistle I have ever heard). I actually hate the whistle, but we tend to forget that we've put the kettle on and have burned through two tea kettles in three years (correction: my husband has done that, LOL), so my husband insists on it.

I fill this kettle up through the pour spout, and hold it open with an extra nudge near the spout so it doesn't clap shut in the process. We virtually always leave it with water sitting in it, and have probably never cleaned it other than rinsing it out, and it's spotless inside. Gleaming like it was when it was brand new, which is impressive. The brushed steel finish also keeps it looking nicer on the outside, unless it gets splattered.

If you make a lot of tea, tend to forget the kettle and want a loud whistle, and don't want to have to clean out your kettle all the time, then go for this kettle. We're actually using ours without the whistler while we wait for the new one, because the Copco one we bought as a replacement leaked everywhere. It's a good kettle, and it's nice to know Oxo stands by its warranty.

2 out of 5 stars Whistle stop   February 8, 2008

Didn't close when set down as advertised, and had to be sure to push the handle down to close it. After several months, the whistle no longer whistled, and I nearly set my kitchen on fire, and melted the cover lid with the whistle in it so that it could no longer be opened. Not worth the cost.
