4 out of 5 stars Take the guesswork out of grilling   May 24, 2008
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

If you own a cheap grill as I do, knowing the temperature while cooking is always a mystery. This thermometer takes the guesswork out of grilling, allowing me to slow roast dry-rub chicken, pork and fish, and ribs. Although I didn't think it would work as well for steaks and burgers, it did show me that my grill temperature can reach 600+ degrees on high burner settings. So by turning the burners down a little, I have had less tendency to overcook. It does accumulate spatter during cooking as others have noted. By pushing it to the corner of the grill, I have minimized this. When it did need cleaning, I used a dab of olive oil on a dishcloth and it came off easily (just be sure to wipe any oil residue off before putting it back on the grill). It's a great bargain for what it does. The only way it could be better is if it could be read outside the grill with the lid down.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of your time and Money   May 16, 2008

Bought this to compare output of my old 1995 Weber Grill to my new PGS-k40(Pacific Gas Specialities), which is NOT an infrared -- just 40000 btu output.

The weber produced 650 on the thermometer, and the PGS was at 750 the last time I saw the reading, as the glass went cloudy, and cracked. The thermometer is useless after its 2nd time out.

Will not waste my time on sending it back - paid $7.99 - guess at least I know the grill has good output. This was backed up by its performance in cooking a nicely seared steak.

2 out of 5 stars NIce, but did not last long   May 4, 2008

The overall build quality seems great, but just after a couple of uses the glass and the numbers started to become unreadable. It seems that it cannot survive the high heat that my grill is generating (~600 degrees).

5 out of 5 stars Thermomenter   April 21, 2008

Worked great! I could tell the temperature of my items on the grill as I was cooking. Alas, a grease fire in my grill over heated the thermomenter and burned it up. - Gerald McNair

5 out of 5 stars tells me when to put the food on   June 2, 2007

I have owned this 'cooking surface' thermometer for a couple of years. I use it to figure out whether the grill is hot enough to put the food on but I don't usually leave it on the grill for extended periods. I take it off when I put the food on. I also use it to calibrate my electric skillet and the surface of pans on my electric stove. If you leave this on your grill forever, all the time, even while the food is cooking, it probably won't last as long as mine has lasted.

Gee now that I'm doing this review, I remember how much I really like this thermometer. I'll be ordering another as a gift for a new cook who could use one.
