Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.com Review
Lots of folks dislike the burnt flavor that coffee gets when it sits in a glass pot over a heating element. To avoid this, coffee shops often brew right into large thermal pots to keep the coffee warm without it becoming overcooked. The Zojirushi Fresh Brew does that, too, but in home-sized batches. It looks great, too, with a glossy black body and stainless steel carafe and brew basket.

To brew, lift the lid and swing the water outlet spout to one side while the filter is being loaded; the spout will return to its proper position when the lid is closed. A small red ball in the water gauge makes it extra simple to read. And an electronic clock module also serves as a timer that will start the brewer at a specified time. The carafe's lid is designed to be on during brewing, with a small cap to help keep the heat in after it's ready. The Fresh Brew also has a pause-and-serve function that stops the flow for 30 seconds while a cup of coffee is served.

To clean the brewer unit, use a solution of white vinegar and water, following the instructions in the accompanying booklet. The unit is not immersible. The exterior can be wiped with a damp soft rag; do not use abrasives or scouring pads. The filter reservoir is removable; clean with warm soapy water and rinse thoroughly. The coffee brewer measures 15 by 12 by 9 inches (includes carafe handle when unit is completely assembled), and it uses #3 cone-shaped disposable paper filters. The Fresh Brew comes with a detailed instruction booklet. Zojirushi guarantees its products with a one-year limited warranty. --Garland Withers

2 out of 5 stars Broken in 4 monthes   September 15, 2008
We purchased this product with high expectations. Let me say, the coffee is delicious and stays hot for around 8 hours in the carafe. We couldn't be happier until it suddenly stopped working.

We contacted customer service, who sent us a cleaning solution. Unfortunately this did not fix our problem either. Their solution now is for us to spend money to ship the coffee maker to a third party for repair.

It seems to us that since this product broke after just 4 months, Zojirushi should really take it upon themselves to repair the coffee maker at no further cost to us. I strongly disagree with asking a consumer to continue to shell out money when the product is defective.

Be cautious buying this product. We are very disappointed in the customer service Zojirushi has offered to us.

5 out of 5 stars Coffee stays hot for hours   September 15, 2008
After returning the Capresso we tried the Zojirushi. Wow it is so much better! Coffee stays hot and fresh for a LONG time. The fill-line indicator is easy to see. It does take a smaller #3 filter but we push a #4 paper filter in with no ill effects. The only negative is that it is difficult to get a good grip on the carafe cover because it is flat and fairly smooth.

4 out of 5 stars The Devil You Know   September 12, 2008

I am buying my second Zojirushi now. I have had this coffee maker for about 3 years (maybe quite a bit more even). I have had most of the problems mentioned in reviews here. Most are minor. It is now making me push the brew button 2 to 5 times to finish brewing the pot. I guess after the length of time I have had it I will not complain too much although I think I am starting to get a lot of pleasure griping about it in the mornings (when your first cup of coffee is screwed with in the morning most of the days problems seem minor and if this observation does not make me take myself less seriously nothing will).

The head of QC at a quality coffee company recommended this coffee maker to me. I will take her word on the quality of the brew because her palette is certainly more skilled and learned than mine. I will say that I have never had a complaint that a different coffee did not fix (the flavored stuff the in-laws bring kills me). A warning though; I try to be a coffee snob but I am only fair to middling at it. I don't know much about water temperature or coffee acidity. I am told that I like good coffee though (I am confused though - isn't good coffee the stuff you like?).

I won't highly recommend or warn anyone away from this coffee maker. After reading the reviews on all the coffee makers on Amazon I will just stay I am sticking with the devil I know.

5 out of 5 stars Best coffee maker!!!   September 7, 2008

This is actually the second one I now own - not because the first one was defective in any way, but because the first one is great. The first one, my husband and I received as a wedding present. We have had that one over 2 yrs now, and it is still working great, after constant use. Nothing has yet to break, unlike my many of my previous coffee makers, and it is very easy to clean - the main parts (the decanter, coffee holder basket) pop right out. To clean the whole system, you just make a pot of white vinegar (not really, but you get the point), which is brainless and cheap! No expensive cleaning solutions or anything. And the decanter is virtually indestructible - we have dropped it on virtually every floor in our house.

This new one is now at my office where it also gets a lot of use - multiple pots a day which are drank by both myself and my co-workers.

As other people have commented, the coffee stays hot for hours (it even stayed fairly warm overnight once), and the coffee maker is really easy to use. And you can stop the "making" process mid-drip process, which is also nice, especially at 7am. And the timer is also nice (as long as you remember to set it)... The coffee also comes out with out that burnt flavor and even after it sit in the decanter for hours, it doesn't taste burnt, because it isn't sitting on a heater.

4 out of 5 stars Two Thumbs Up - Makes Very Good Coffee   September 5, 2008
I'm very pleased with this coffee maker so far. Makes a smooth tasty cup of coffee, and stays very warm in the carafe. It is attractive and seems well made. If it lasts, I will be very happy. Didn't give it five stars because it is still new, and too soon to know if it will maintain current level of performance.
