5 out of 5 stars Take A Walk On the Dark Side   August 30, 2008

To say The Deviant Moon Tarot deck is just another deck in Rider Waite Smith tradition would be an understatement. The deck takes you into another world of ying/yang insectoid creatures populating a bleak industrial landscape. Patrick Valenza subliminally inserted images from cemataries and an abandonded insane asylum into the images. My first impression upon my receipt of the deck that it was too dark for me to do readings with for people I ordinarily would read for; but for those whose tastes lean to the unusual I'm sure it would work fine. The symbolism of the images maintain traditional interpretations in most cases, but give it a new twist. I think this is an excellent deck for collectors as well as those whose tastes and insights gravitate towards dark imaginings. Valenza is a talented surrealist, and more than just in a deck of cards, the images belong in a museum as each are a unique work of art, making the old new again and reinterpreting it for our times.

4 out of 5 stars Intresting   August 30, 2008
I enjoyed the fresh style but still it has enough of a historical approach that it's not completly like starting over, some of the images are funny others more serious. It has a good mix of both.

5 out of 5 stars Great Imagery   August 28, 2008

I purchased this deck solely on the name and the pic on the box. The name "Deviant Moon" struck a chord with me and I knew I had to have them. After examining the images, I am in love with them! The images are similar enough to the traditional imagery to make them easy to read. On the other hand, the images have enough variety from the traditional images to develop newer and broader interpretations of each card. Now, we all know the Five of Cups is a card that is sometimes unpleasant to see in a reading, but the Deviant Moon version actually makes me giggle every time I see it. In traditional decks, the Devil card is usually pretty ominous and it's difficult to see the possibility of rebirth after the change, but in this deck, the rebirth aspect actually speaks louder. I find all of this refreshing and highly recommend this deck.

3 out of 5 stars Not in love with it   August 19, 2008

I purchased this and sold it pretty quickly thereafter! The artwork is original, and the images depicted are accurate overall. However, I found it impossible to read with. Most of the images did not speak to me, because they are somewhat cubist and fantastic in the truest sense of the word. If that type of art is your thing, I recommend the deck. If not, pass. While viewing the cards online, it looked like a great new deck to be had. But in my hands, it was a completely different story!

5 out of 5 stars Surreal and beautiful   August 10, 2008

Deviant Moon Tarot is a feast for the senses, and not a superficial one. Patrick Valenza spent many years planning and designing this deck, and he is paid for his effort tenfold by the stunning images he has produced. The cards are packed with original symbolism and invite thoughtful and deep readings.

This deck will take you places you've only dreamed about!

It's been described by many as a 'dark' deck, but I would describe it as a 'deep' deck, built from dreams and madness, like the inspired ravings of a shaman.

A wonderful addition to any tarot collection, and a real treasure for any reader!
