What better way to launch Family Guy's sixth season and commemorate Star Wars' 30th anniversary than with this double-length Very Special Episode, a full-scale, awesomely animated spoof that recasts George Lucas' saga with Family Guy's galaxy of characters: Chris (Seth Green) is Luke; Lois (Alex Borstein) is Princess Leia; Peter (Seth McFarlane) is Han Solo, but not, as expected, Jabba the Hut; Brian (Seth, again) is Chewbacca; Quagmire (and again, Seth) is C3PO; Cleveland is R2D2; Herbert, the creepy senior pedophile, is Obi-Wan (both voiced by Mike Henry); and, of course, Stewie (Seth, already) is Darth Vader ("My diapers have gone over to the dark side"). Poor Meg is reduced to a cameo as the hideous reptilian creature that haunts the garbage compactor. Blue Harvest is reverently faithful to A New Hope, while engaging in typical Family Guy pop-culture references (everything from those old Grey Poupon commercials to Doctor Who, Airplane, Dirty Dancing, and Deal or No Deal) and bizarre digressions (the iconic opening crawl detours into an appreciation of a "way naked" Angelina Jolie in Gia). Along for the wild ride are Judd Nelson, who contributes a voice cameo as John Bender for a Breakfast Club gag, Rush Limbaugh railing against futuristic affirmative action on Tatooine talk radio, and Beverly D'Angelo and Chevy Chase as the vacationing Griswolds observing the rebellion from their orbiting station wagon. A Star Wars spoof in 2007 isn't exactly uncharted territory. As Chris Griffin notes in this episode's final moments, Robot Chicken brilliantly did it months earlier (and let us not forget Mel Brooks' Spaceballs from 1987; or, on second thought...). But the Force is strong with Family Guy, and who could resist the opportunity to hear the Muzak playing in a Death Star elevator? --Donald Liebenson

4 out of 5 stars Fun For the Not-Easily-Offended Crowd   December 28, 2008
I really enjoyed this episode. The writing is clever and is technically quite expensive for a weekly show. Since it was done with George Lucas' approval any complaints that he would not like it are wrong. The DVD has some material that was left out of the broadcast version and there is a digital copy available now. Sometimes Family Guy can be a bit insensitive but not so here. If you are afraid your child will be corrupted watching this I suggest you don't turn it on. You need to chill. I think they did a good job of using the Family Guy characters in the Star Wars IV movie. Certainly anyone familiar with the show will not be offended.

4 out of 5 stars Great Episode; Nice Set   December 6, 2008
The Family Guy: Blue Harvest Special Edition DVD is, simply put, a great set. The episode itself is hilarious, and easily on par with the rest of the series. The features that come with it are awesome too.

In the package, you get (from left to right):
-A pack of Blue Harvest cards, which (when assembled) form a 3-D picture
-A pair of 3-D glasses to view the complete puzzle and a 3-D scene on the DVD
-A 2-disc DVD, which comes with the episode (disc 1) and a digital copy (disc 2)
-An XL T-shirt
-A booklet entitled The Art of Family Guy: Blue Harvest

Of the extra stuff, the booklet stands out as the most interesting, providing some storyboards, concept art and the likes. Seeing the way the episode sort of came into being was rather nice.

Now, my only complaint with the set (which is what stops it from being a five-star product) are the packaging of the rest of the extras. Despite the fact that they're neat, if you take them out of the package, the set gets really messed up. When you take the plastic wrapping off the cards, they don't fit in the slot anymore, and they fall out (the 3-D glasses, however, still fit nicely without their respective plastic wrapping). Obviously, if you open the T-shirt, it won't fit in the box anymore--leaving a gaping hole in the box. Now, that stuff may just be nitpicking, but it really does hinder the visual appeal of the set.

Overall, though, this Special Edition set is worth buying whether you're a fan of Family Guy, Star Wars, or are just in the mood to laugh.

4 out of 5 stars Great Deal   November 30, 2008
I am a huge fan of Family Guy, I have to say I love this movie. I recommend buying this special edition package it comes with an XL Shirt, 3D glasses, trading cards and a nice book. I found this on sale for $10 at a store with the name Sam in it, hint hint.

5 out of 5 stars From a Star Wars and Family Guy fan...   September 25, 2008

Why did it take so long to do this? It is laugh-out-load funny! And I wear the special shirt all the time. I love this. I can't wait for the nest one, and yea, they are making another.

4 out of 5 stars Awesome for the serious FG fan   September 19, 2008
This is the best Star Wars parody I've ever seen. Even non Family Guy fans will love it. This version includes a shirt, trading cards, and 3D glasses to watch the exclusive to this version 3d fight scene. Unless you're a really serious FG fan, just get the regular edition. The cards and shirt are cool, but the 3D scene is a waste. The quality is poor, and not worth bothering with, which is why I rate it 4 stars not 5. I loved the extras like Seth McFarlane's interview with George Lucas. He would hum tunes from different parts of different Star Wars movies, and see if George knew what part the tune came from. George missed them all. Classic. Either way, this dvd is awesome!
