Amazon.com Review
Beautiful enough to bring to the table yet durable enough to outlive its 101-year warranty against defects, this heavy casserole is perfect for preparing and ceremoniously serving dishes such as braised short ribs with sauerkraut, cassoulet, and vegetable soup. Use it in the oven or on the stovetop. Made of cast iron, with an exterior and interior clad in two coats of Le Creuset's famous bright enamel, the round casserole holds 4-1/2 quarts. Cast iron is unexcelled for heat distribution and retention, so this casserole cooks foods evenly and gently at low temperatures without hot spots and is suitable for all heat sources. The plastic knob on its heavy, tight-fitting lid is ovenproof to 450 degrees F. This casserole is dishwasher safe and has loop handles for easy lifting. Like all Le Creuset cast-iron products, it is hand cast in a one-of-a-kind sand mold and hand finished at the Le Creuset factory in France. --Fred Brack

5 out of 5 stars the best   September 30, 2008
Cooking with this dutch oven is like none other, whether main meals or pralines for dessert!

5 out of 5 stars Old-world methods in a modern kitchen   July 22, 2008
The French oven is simply a Dutch over covered in ceramic. I wanted cast iron to do longer, more even cooking. The thought of cleaning up even more iron didn't sit right with me, so a French oven was a no-brainer.

The oven does hold a massive amount of energy and, thusly, evens a cooking process tremendously. [Read: retaining energy does mean you will use lower heat settings on the stovetop and inside a convection oven.] It does very well on the stovetop for stews. It also performs very smoothly in the oven for meat and veg.

The oven cleans up easily. The hardest part is dealing with a wet, slippery object that weighs a few pounds. Other than that, soap and a smooth sponge are all that's needed. Only once have I needed Bar Keeper's Friend. I have seen a bit of rust that came from washing and not drying (the rim of the body and the adjacent part of the lid are the only places that are not ceramic coated). It came off in seconds, but now I put it back on the stove top (on low) to dry it off.

The lid is the same thickness as the rest of the body. It fits very snugly and holds in almost all moisture. That's nice to have that control instead of watching steam escape.

Overall, I am very happy with this purchase. It's nice to know that I have such a versitile piece of cooking gear. It performs many tasks, does them very well, and looks great in the process.

5 out of 5 stars I love love love this french oven   December 31, 2005

This is one of the best items to have in your kitchen. It means 1-pot cooking when you're making stews, soups or casseroles from scratch. The finish is fabulous and it stays that way. It's pretty enough to serve from at the table. This size is great for anything up to a moderate sized chicken or pot roast. It heats evenly and retains the heat well. I love love love this french oven. I'm going to aim toward filling my kitchen with Le Creuset from now on!

Just want to let you all know that the lid of this 4-1/2 quart pan also fits the 9-1/2" inch Tarte Tatin/Anniversary pan ...

In addition to buying this 4-1/2" round oven, I wanted to buy a small Buffet Casserole (the 2-quart size) to cook chicken & rice or pork chops when it's just my husband and myself, but I decided to buy the Tarte Tatin/"Anniversary" pan (same pan, two different names) instead for two reasons:

1) One less lid in the cupboard
2) I thought the shape of the anniversary pan's flat bottom would be a little bit more useful. I can make Tarte Tatin of course, but also regular cakes (come out delicious, just line this pan with parchment paper -- the cake comes out so perfect you may throw away your cake pans to make space for more Le Creuset cookware, lol), quiche, one pot breakfasts, etc.

Because the lid of this 4-1/2" oven fits on top of the anniversary pan, I can also use that anniversary pan to cook dishes with rice in them, poach chicken breats, etc.

Of course, read all the other reviews about this 4-1/2 quart size pan. It's the perfect size pan to cook meals for 6 people.

FYI: If you are trying to decide what size to buy, just to let you know Le Creuset recommends that you choose a pan size where the contents of what you are trying to cook fills the pan at least 50%, if not three-quarters of the way full to the top, to make the most of the radiant heat qualities of cast iron (with this cast iron pan, the heat not only travels through the bottom of the pan, but also up the sides -- very different from your usual stainless steal or aluminum pan, which is why you use lower heat with these pans than with stainless steel pans).

If you use too large of a pan, your ingredients may dry out before they are cooked all the way through. Also, if you are cooking rice, if there is too much space at the top (if your pan is only 25 percent full), you may not get enough steam pressure to cook the rice all the way through.

If this is your first Le Creuset purchase, but the size of pan you'll use the most of the time, not the size you use when you cook for company. These pans are so addictive, you'll can always buy the bigger size later for specialty recipes.

This 4-1/2 quart is perfect for cooking for 3 to 6 people.

The 3-1/2 quart is perfect for 2 to 4 people.

The 2-1/2 quart is good for 1 or 2 people, or rice for 4 people.

5 out of 5 stars My kitchen workhorse   February 24, 2003

I got my first Le Creuset cookware in 1978. It was my college graduation week, & I was relaxing on the lawn reading the Sunday Boston Globe. I saw an ad for a Le Creuet starter set (French oven + 2 covered saucepans + skillet) for $..., so I decided to go for it since I was about to be out of the dorm living on my own. That purchase turned out to be one of my best investments ever, as I still use all the pieces today. I now have 3 French ovens, 5 covered saucepans, 3 skillets, 1 oval au gratin, 1 multi 2-in-1 pan with nonstick omelette cover, & 1 cheese fondue set, all in flame. These cast iron utensils are virtually indestructible, except for a few minor dings in the outer enamel. They cook very evenly, given the cast iron, making me a possibly better than average cook (they're one of my unfair advantages). My only problem with the cookware is the heavy weight, but that comes with the territory with cast iron utensils. I guess I'll have to get someone else to lift the pots when I'm old & decrepit. I know they'll outlive me!

The 4-1/2 qt French oven is the workhorse of my kitchen, so much so that I have two. I boil pasta in it & make big soups, gumbos, stews, casseroles, & you name it in it. I use it on top of the stove & in the oven. And then it goes to the table for serving, given its attractiveness.

Don't be put off by the high price of Le Creuset pots & pans. In the long run, they're a bargain because of their long life. I intend to pass mine down to my sons. Bon appetit!
