5 out of 5 stars Forget The Ridges   May 22, 2008
Bought this one based upon a pro cook's review. He was absolutely right. Clean-up is a snap with the flat surfaces. Very little spatter. Cooks everything evenly. Big, bright LED lights monitor heat level and tell you when to add food. Compact for storage. We do not cook meats, it IS grilling indoors after all, and can make quite a mess. WE always use an exhaust fan while cooking. Does create a lot of fumes. We use it for sandwich-Paninis, French toast, fried eggs. Forget the ridges. FLAT is where it's at.

5 out of 5 stars Panini maker   March 25, 2008

After our trip to Italy we fell in love with paninis. Reading all the reviews on panini makers I decided to purchase this one. It has not disappointed. It browns evenly and takes common, everyday sandwiches and turns them into crispy paninis. Only problem is everywhere you see the silver it's as hot as an iron. I guess that would be a no-brainer for some people, but I have 2 burns to prove it's not for me! If you don't have a safe place to use it away from children, don't buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Sensational Paninis!   March 18, 2008

This panini press makes the most delicious sandwiches you've ever tasted. Why heat up less than 100% of the surface area? The fact that the bottom and top plates are flat means you get your food faster and it's more evenly heated.

For those that are wondering if just using a thin crepe pan on the stove and heating your sandwich one side at a time is the same, it's not. I used to do that and hesitated buying this product as I couldn't really see why it would be different. With a crepe pan, you'll get warm sandwiches that are unevenly heated at best.

Plus this press does a lot more. One of the unexpected uses was making eggs, over easy, without the mess. I used to dirty up a pan and a lid (I never flip eggs, but steam them by adding water). It's faster, easier, with nearly zero cleanup. Just wipe the plates with a paper towel. The eggs are perfectly done, with vibrant yolks for toast, in 4 minutes.

We've heated tortillas for tacos, made quesadillas, french toast, several kinds of paninis, and more. This is a very high quality product that we use all the time in our kitchen.

5 out of 5 stars I use this for many foods beyond sandwiches!   March 14, 2008

I have owned two of these sandwich makers. The first one stopped working after a couple of years of use. I think it burnt out. I liked it so much, I bought another Breville, and that one is running fine. I make all kinds of foods on this grill. I grill hot dogs, hamburgers, steaks, kabobs, chicken breasts, etc. in addition to sandwiches like grilled cheese and reuben sandwiches (YUM!). If I recall correctly, the information that came with the machine said not to grill meats on it and not to use cooking spray on it either, but I do both and have had no problem. It is easy to clean due to the flat surface, and also the articulated hinge on the top is a good feature. I rather wish the bottom grill had a hole in it for excess grease to drain into a container set below the grill, but it does not. Also, I wish it got just a wee bit hotter than it does to brown foods a little better, but it does brown things okay. It's just that I like food browned a little more than most people, I guess. The heat level is preset, and you can't alter it. Those are the only things about this grill I would change if I could. I use this grill a lot. If you buy steaks for yourself and others, be sure they are boneless and are all about the same height so they get done at the same time. I stick a food thermometer sideways into meats to keep track of doneness. That helps a lot. For Christmas, with family at my house, I grilled six little beef filets with the thermometer stuck into one of them. There was just enough room for them on the grill, and they turned out great! I should mention that my husband does NOT like charcoal grilled food, and just tolerates gas grilled food, so this grill is really great for us. It's just not worth it for me to maintain a charcoal or gas grill just for myself, so this is a good compromise. Also you use it in the house, so it's more convenient than grilling outside. Like I said, I use it all the time.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent grill for every day use.   February 6, 2008

My family uses this grill nearly every day, often more than once in the same day. It is very versatile and a breeze to keep clean. It heats quickly, if you don't wipe it off after using, just plug it back in for a minute, give it a little spritz of white vinegar and wipe clean. I wasn't certain if I would miss having a drip catcher, but I don't. There's never much liquid left behind because it heats so well. I've owned several "Foreman" grills, which if not cleaned continuously became a nightmare, with all those grooves, which really serve no practical purpose. We use this press to cook meat, vegetables, pancakes, sandwiches, toast, frozen waffles and to reheat leftovers. It takes up very little counter space, which was one of my goals. I replaced our toaster oven and Foreman grill with this press. It stands on it's end, takes almost no room at all, when not being used, yet is an excellent size to hold a large quanity for cooking. Follow the directions, don't use any products to "grease it", it's very nonstick! Superb product.
