5 out of 5 stars Easy and healthy   October 15, 2008

I love homemade yogurt, and so do my young kids. I have made it by using an oven, a warming plate, and the other "free" methods. This is so much easier and reliable - it was worth the expense. I get consistently delicious yogurt. My only suggestion is to only keep it in the yogurt maker for 3 hours after proper preparation. Most recipes say 4 hours or more, but this always gave me lumpy yogurt. If you haven't tried it, we love yogurt mixed with some jam - just like "fruit on the bottom".

1 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware of Excess Shipping Costs   October 7, 2008

For the $2.95 yogurt starter Amazon charges $4.98 for shipping. What a ripoff.

5 out of 5 stars Will save me over $30 per month!   October 6, 2008

This yogurt is amazing! I let my first batch process the 4-hour minimum using organic, whole milk and one container of organic blueberry yogurt (no powdered milk). When it was done, I added 1/2 tsp. of vanilla and my two little ones loved it! I plan to use vanilla soymilk next time and freeze some. I wish I would've discovered this product years ago!

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for specific carbohydrate diet   October 4, 2008

I'm on the specific carbohydrate diet to address food intolerances, and being able to make 24-hour yogurt is essential. I bought this a few days ago and just made the best tasting yogurt I've had. Unfortunately because I drained off the whey, then let the rest drip out through a lined colander to make creamier, greek style yogurt (you can't use milk powder to thicken on SCD), this maker doesn't produce very much yogurt. But given the limitations of my pots, drip pans and other equipment, a larger maker wouldn't work, so I've just ordered a second one of these. It's extremely simple to use, and small enough to store even in my small city apartment. Also, I read a review of one of the water-filled makers, and the reviewer pointed out that it gets too hot after 10 hours, so it wouldn't work for SCD. This one is perfect.

5 out of 5 stars Handy if you like yogurt   September 16, 2008

I felt like a dork when I first received this - I'd been making my own yogurt for years without one, and somehow thought with a "yogurt maker" I'd just dump the starter and milk in and push a button and come back a few hours later to yogurt. At first I was annoyed to find I still needed to boil the milk and mix in the starter and that this would simply incubate my yogurt. But now that I've had it several months I can say it was definitely a worthwhile purchase. I used to have a gas oven, and I'd put the yogurt in there to incubate - the pilot light kept it at a steady warm temperature. But I now have an electric oven, and its interior light doesn't really do the job - I'd have to keep coming back, checking the temp, switching the oven to "warm" and then come back again to make sure it didn't get too hot. It's so much more convenient to just stick it in my "yogurt maker" and not worry about it!

I followed a previous reviewer's suggestion and ditched the inner container for glass - I found the jars of a product I buy regularly fit perfectly, even better than quart canning jars (it's Orlando brand grape leaves, if anyone's dying to know). No worries about plastic, and I have plenty of containers if I want to make more yogurt before I've finished the old batch!
