4 out of 5 stars not a commercial grinder   September 10, 2008
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

I bought this one for my DH. He has been really happy with it, but I should say this is not a commercial food grinder that you will be able to grind up 90 lbs of meat at a time without any babying. The first time we used it, we learned quickly that any of the white connective tissue will clog the grinding plates. For our home use, making a little bit of ground meat here and there, this works great. We bought it with the sausage stuffer attachment and made some great deer sausages.

4 out of 5 stars Gift for wife   September 10, 2008
My wife thinks it works well. Makes all our breakfast sausage. Just follow directions about how different foods grind best and you'll get good results.

3 out of 5 stars Not Rust proof   August 11, 2008
The food grinder works nicely for grinding walnuts. With hazlenuts I had problem because they are tougher. I have to process it first and then grind it. The machine gets hot after a while using it for grinding. However the main concern that I have is that the metalic parts are not stainless steal and after washing should be dried out carefully. Otherwise you see the patch of rust all over it and should scrub them out. For such price I expected a little more attention to details like this.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent way to slash up to 50% off each pound of meat   August 10, 2008
As an avid reader of money saving blogs and web sites (Dollar Stretcher is a favorite) I read many times about the cost savings of purchasing a roast and having it ground by the butcher. My mom does this at her Publix grocery store in Florida but my local grocery store in Wisconsin refuses to do it. Hello KA FGA! I am completely impressed by what a fantastic job it does. It grinds perfectly to the texture I want. After several experiments, my family actually prefers the coarser texture for certain dishes (tacos especially.) I love the fact that I can buy a couple of hunks of Black Angus boneless roasts when it goes on sale for $1.99/lb. and come home and grind it myself to my exact specs. Not only is it much less expensive than the high fat pre-ground stuff, it is much safer. The less surface area to a piece of meat, the better. The FGA is a fantastic cost saving tool. I find it easy to assemble, use and clean. As I buy in bulk, I only use it about once every 5 or 6 weeks. There is a small bit of buildup inside but such a small amount it does not affect anything. If one were grinding up a huge amount of high fat meat, I would stop and clean it out. Should take you no more than 20 seconds total. Love this attachment. It has already paid for itself!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent product!   July 4, 2008

The grinder attachment works perfectly every time. For raw meat I grind it twice and the texture comes out just right. I suggest grinding the meat when it's half-defrosted as I noticed the meat gets stuck easily when it is completely defrosted or fresh.

Like other reviewers have suggested, try to keep the job done in 15 minutes as the motor in the mixer can get really warm and feels like it's about to burn out...! I would even suggest 10 minutes at a time as I don't want to overworked my mixer and end up paying big $$$ for the repair!! And I also suggest getting the optional "plate" for a larger work area on top, perfect for grinding the meat the second time without having to scoop-press-scoop-press...

Cleanup is easy with a dishwasher, or handwash with a brush. Just use extra dishwashing liquid as the plastic can get greasy! Overall I'm satisfied with my purchase.
