After throughly researching and taking the recommendation of consumer reports we purchased this humidifier. We had a good run for two months, although the humidistat was not accurate. Then the trouble started...we changed the filters, maintained it properly. When the humidifier was turned off or stopped when the humidity level reached it's desired level the unit slowly drains all the water out from the bottom. We have been unable to get the unit replaced or repaired.

honeywell M450 rocks March 29, 2008
In my opinion you can't go wrong with the Honeywell HWM450. Here's why, We live in the NYC area of the country and the winters are very dry. There are not many places to live with central heat/air. We have rads throughout our apt which can make the air much drier.

My wife is a classical singer and was going to the doctor with vocal cord issues. His answer was to drink more water because she was dehydrated. We figured out that with her normal intake that she must be loosing water while w slept. Makes alot of sense if you used rad heat.

I searched here first because I knew that there would be options to judge an rewiew on other sites. I chose this model for the price, reviews, and product claims.
SIX MONTHS LATER
Now that the winter season is almost over I have to say that this model was the correct choice. With her normal water consumption and the HWM450 there have been no doctor visits and dry nights is not an issue anymore.

EASY TO USE AND CLEAN
The model comes in 4 pieces and very well tought out. The BASE: is moulded plastic with very little small crevises for th cleanning. The stainles hot plate is in the base too. There is a type of control module that seats right into the base to the front. The 1.5 gallon holding tank sits on the back and seats very securely. It is a very nice package.
CLEANING
Again I can't say a bad thing about it.... I use tap water which is or is not high in calcium not real sure but the unit gets cleaned every 3 to 4 weeks. there is build up in the nooks but nothing and hour of time can't fix for the whole unit. White vinager on the hotplate and a butter knife on the plastics usually work just fine.

BEST PART OF ALL......
This actually my second unit... the first one really didn't seem to do anything due to the quite factor. I sat and filled out amazons return page and was given a bar coded return printout with no questions asked. Before I got it sent out there was another unit at my door.

Does not work March 19, 2008

It looks like I can't give zero stars, so I guess I have to give 1. It has a built-in hygrometer that shuts it off once the desired humidity level has been reached. However, since the built-in hygrometer always thinks the room's humidity level is over 70%, and it is not willing to humidify beyond 65%, the machine never actually puts water in the air. It's kind of like if the heater in your house always thought the temperature were 90 degrees and thus never turned on.

In the package is one of those "stop" tags that says that rather than returning it, you should call their 1-800 number and allow them to help you. They were polite, but had no suggestions. Thus I have returned it. I suggest buying a different model.

quiet, easy to clean humidifier March 15, 2008

I've just bought a second one for our second child's room. I've had the first one for 4 years. I like the large opening for cleaning out the storage tank - it's quiet and appears to be very durable.

There was a comment in another person's review re: burning smell. If you just put a new replacement pad in, I'd recommend wetting it first before turning on the humidifier.

Great...until it fails March 15, 2008

I did my research, but didn't listen to all the comments of the machine just quitting without warning. It was a good machine for about six weeks, although you do have to keep it clean. But one night it just quit. I know I should of listened to the warning of others and kept the box, but I didn't. I definitely recomment that you do not purchase this product.
