It's a bargain December 27, 2007

Looking at the reviews of this an other Vacuvin products, you see reports that are deeply contradictory. It's interesting that there is such a divergence of experience with such a simple product. The ideas behind Vacuvin are pretty simple.
First, air is the enemy of an open bottle of wine. Bacteria in the air want to turn alcohol into vinegar. The air itself oxidizes and dulls the taste of all but the most robust wines.
Second, you can remove some of the air with a simple pump and thereby slow down the rate at which wine deteriorates.

Why then, do we have both no-star and five-star reactions to this product?
Maybe the biggest source of disagreement is expectations. Vacuvin slows the deterioration of wine in the bottle, but it doesn't stop it.

Another possible reason for all the disagreement might be a question of temperature. The biochemical reactions that kill your wine are temperature sensitive. They proceed faster when the wine is warm and slow down when it's cool. Putting a pumped-out bottle in the refrigerator or wine cooler will slow down the spoilage processes and make Vacuvin more effective.
A third issue is the way the wine is handled before the Vacuvin plug goes in. If wine has a lot of air dissolved in it by being poured from decanter to bottle, there's no system that will keep it fresh.

Keeps wine fresh November 3, 2007

I'm really happy with this product. I'm the only one in the house who drinks wine, so I always talk myself out of opening a bottle because I'm afraid it will go bad before I get a chance to drink it all. The wine saver really seems to work. Now I don't hesitate to open a bottle of wine, even if I only want half a glass. I wish I had bought it years ago.

This little pump pumps the air out of an already opened bottle of wine so that it remains fresh. It's easy to use and keep clean, well worth the money.

Works as advertised, keeps vacuum and wine fresh for up to 1 week. After 1 week, poured a glass of wine and still had to wait about 15 minutes for the red to gain full body.

Better Wine for Longer May 15, 2007

I've used the Wine Savers for years now. This new unit has a different type of stopper that previously. These are easier to clean than the older style as they separate into two pieces. I never had trouble with the older styles though as I only had to squeeze the perimeter of the stopper to open the valve and clean. The new pump does SEEM to me to be slower to build a vacuum with the new stoppers that I experience with the older pump that I still use as well. I'm not certain if the increased time is due to the new style stopper or to the pump. (Easy to check, but haven't yet.) I always recap and vacuum even between glasses of wine as I keep my wine in a wine cooler (electric) and that requires laying the bottles horizontal and a vacuum to prevent spillage. I would consider not having a wine vacuum system. My wine stays good for days, easily. If you enjoy good wine, these vacuum sets pay for themselves rapidly, that is unless you drink your bottles completely -- that may be next!!! I rate this as a 4 rather than a 5 due to the apparent slower time to creat a vacuum. Still beats the heck out of hooking up the Food Saver apparatus for the small task. Buy it and get extra stoppers if you have a house keeper. Mine thought the stoppers were disposable!!
