4 out of 5 stars Good product at an excellent price   February 24, 2007

I received a set of 6 Spiegelau Authentis Bordeaux glasses as a gift this past x-mas, and I'm very happy with them.

When I was shopping for them (yeah I got them as a gift but I specifically asked for them), I was comparing them to the Riedel Vinum Bordeaux. I've used both and, while the Riedel is probably slightly better in terms of quality, I couldn't justify the price difference - particularly because I'm prone to breaking glasses. In short, the Spiegelau is probably 90% as good as (if not just as good as) the Riedel Vinum at less than 50% of the price. If you're confident that you will rarely if ever break a glass, then the Riedel might be worth the price diffence - but if you're like me and break glasses every now and again and can't stomach the thought of breaking a glass that sells for over $100 per set of six, I'd highly recommend the Spiegelau over the Riedel.

A big, high quality glass like this made of thin glass really does enhance the look and taste of wine. There is a big difference between this glass and a typical cheapo wine glass (i.e. small and made with thicker glass) you get too often in restaurants. There may be a small difference in the tasting experience between this glass and a more expensive glass such as a Riedel Vinum, but personally I can't discern any.

Any wine glass of this general type (i.e., any reasonably expensive wine glass) will break easily, so ignore the negative reviews criticizing them for being fragile - of course they're fragile, what did you expect?

In the two months since I got them, I've broken one glass while washing/drying. I now wash them in the dishwasher which technically isn't the best way to wash them, but I'm such a clutz I'm liable to break more if I hand wash them.

I highly recommend them and would buy them again (and probably will at some point due to breakage).

5 out of 5 stars No Question: Great Wine Glasses   February 23, 2007
They arrived on time and unbroken - expertly shipped. All of the elegance, functionality and quality of Riedel and almost 1/2 the price. You can't beat that. If you already enjoy drinking wine from your wedding gift set, you may find drinking from these even more enjoyable as they do enhance the bouquet and the taste of the wine (I've used them for Bordeaux, Rioja, Chateauneuf du Pape, etc. as well as Tempranillo, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.) All of our more expensive, more fragile Riedels are long gone to the great broken glass box in the sky. Enough of that - buy these glasses and use the money left over for that bottle of wine you thought was out of reach...and you'll have the glass to enjoy it.

4 out of 5 stars a fine wine glass   January 12, 2007
We like the heft, the form, and the feel of these glasses. Keep in mind that they measure 9 1/4 inches in height. I assume there may be better glasses to be had (thus the 4 stars) but they seem a bargain to us.

4 out of 5 stars Spiegelau's family resemblance to Riedel   January 11, 2007
The Spiegelau Authentis series is expanding into more varietal specific glass shapes. The Bordeaux glasses share a number of similarities with the Riedel Vinum line's Bordeaux glasses, but with a slightly heavier, thicker glass than Vinum, but at a much lower cost. Overall, a glass that shows off the cabernet / Bordeaux aromas well.

2 out of 5 stars The glasses were ok ... but our package only had 5 glasses, not 6   November 10, 2006

The glasses were ok, but not great, for Bordeaux and other red wines. Additionally, only 5 glasses arrived in our box (which was intended to be a set of 6). Merchant refused to respond to requests to send the 6th glass--or provide a pro-rata refund for the missing glass--so we sent all 5 of them back. Oh well.
