1 out of 5 stars Unit is junk   January 2, 2008

I bought this for my girlfriend for Christmas. She was excited to get it and we tried it out Christmas day. The unit, straight out of the box, wouldn't power up.

Back to the store the day after Christmas for an exchange. Took the second one home, same problem.

Went to Amazon to read reviews to see if anyone else had this problem, and, after reading the mostly bad reviews, I'm not going to waste my time on a third unit.

Concept sounds really good, guess it is just bad execution.

2 out of 5 stars It's Going Back   December 31, 2007

I bought this because there are almost no alternatives. I'm returning it because it isn't as useful to me as my refrigerator. First, it is very noisy; about like a cheap bathroom fan. Second, it cools very slowly. Third, one can't override the preset temperatures. Perhaps there are people who would take the "expert" recommendation without question; I wouldn't. I like white wines VERY cold; this unit is hard-pressed to cool to 41degrees F. Next time, I'll try a Cooper Cooler.

5 out of 5 stars I really like mine!!   December 28, 2007

I have to say I'm shocked by the bad reviews, I love this product! It usually takes less than ten minutes to get my red wines to optimal drinking temps. and the temp. of red wine is really important to the taste. I'm not a wine expert, but I noticed that reds I liked in restuarants and then had at home just didn't taste as good. I found out that 5-10 degrees off of the optimal temp. can make a huge difference in how your red wine will taste, and now my red wines taste great! As for whites and sparkling wines, yes, they will take to long to cool just in the chiller. On the rare occaisions that I drink them, I put them in the fridge first and then in the chiller to come up or down to the proper temp. I recommend this product, especially for red wine drinkers.

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time or money   December 25, 2007

I received this as a Christmas gift 2007. We used this tonight and what a terrible waste of time. We took 2 bottles of white chardonnay out of the pantry, put one in the refridgerator and the other in the chiller. When I added the bottle to the chiller, it took several minutes (about 10) before it could even tell me what the current temperature was (69 degress). The book says it would take approximately 53 minutes to chill to the serving temperature of 48 degrees. Over 2 hours...yes I said 2 hours later it finally displayed CHEERS! I agree with a previouse review in that I believe the bottom of the bottle was colder then the top or internal wine temperature. Don't waste your time on this product. By the way, the one we put in the refrigerator was ready in 30min.

This product isn't even close to delivering what it has promised.

3 out of 5 stars Somewhat Handy for Red Wines   November 24, 2007

I wish I had read everyone's reviews here before impulsively buying this gadget from another merchant! To augment the excellent review of Laura Davis who put the Waring PC100 to a scientific temperature test, I chilled a bottle of chardonnay (which didn't take too long in my cold environment as it's 29F outside and I never raise my thermostat above 62F). Nevertheless, after the device indicated my bottle had reached the ideal 48F according to the wine library, an immediate temperature probe in the first poured glass registered 52F.

Not only does it fall short of properly chilling a white wine, it doesn't handle all sizes of 750 ml champagne bottles, although it has a champagne setting (and forget about using it to chill a dry Franconian white wine in a Mateus-shaped "Bocksbeutel"!). Moreover, its loud, whooshing fan distracts while entertaining. I'll make sure to keep it in a distant room away from guests.

I will not return this device, but use it mostly for bringing red wines to a more or less drinkable temperature until I upgrade to a wine refrigerator. I really like what the Waring PC100 does with a Pinot noir!
