5 out of 5 stars Keeps things as cold as it keeps them hot   September 11, 2008
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

Temperature:
Well, I live in Florida so I purchased this thermous to keep my drinks cool; and if you know anything about black cars and water bottles during the summer heat in any sub-tropic region, then you'll know that within an hour any water in a black car will be hot enough to scald your mouth. This thermous has repeditively kept my water at a refreshing 40 or so degrees after 2-5 hours in a black car. Now I might want to warn you that the outside of the thermous is often too hot to hold comfortably, but the water on the inside is always, always still very, very cold.

Taste:
None. The Nissan thermous gives off no metallic taste that I can detect.

Cleaning:
I have not washed the thermous in the dish washer as it is cautioned against both online and in the product's manual. So instead I followed the advice of another reviewer and have found their method simple and effective. All that is needed is a little dish soap and some hot water.

1)Pour a small amount of dish soap into the thermous
2)Pour in some hot water
3)Cap the thermous with your hand and shake vigorously
4)Rinse with water several times

So far this method has worked well, including one instance where I accidentally left water in it partially uncapped for two days. The smell was unbareable, but after washing it as usual there was no smell whatsoever.

Overall strength of design:
It seems to of held up rather well for the five weeks I've had it so far. However, contrary to many of the reviews I've read about it, it does dent. If dropped slightly off kilter of the center, from nearly any height, onto a hard surface, it will dent. However, if dropped on its side it seems that it only scratches minorly. Oh yes, and it does scratch if you're rough on your stuff like I am. But I personally like the look.

I also would like to mention that I use this thermous in a salt water environment regularly and I've had no rust issues to-date. Though I would recommend washing in fresh water after the fact.

Manufacturer:
If your into the whole boycott of products made in China, then I'm afraid you will have to search elsewhere, because this, like pretty much everything else nowadays, is made in China.

Conclusion:
Though I was disappointed that the thermous is not 'invincible' like I've seen claimed, I am extremely happy with its ability to keep my water cold.

5 out of 5 stars Delivers as Promised   August 25, 2008
I love this thermos. Unlike most products I buy, I actually read the directions on this one. I fill it with hot water while I'm getting ready in the morning, then fill it with coffee before leaving for work. I ride my motorcycle about 20 miles each morning with the thermos strapped to the back and my coffee is still piping hot when I get to my desk. I would definitely buy it again.

2 out of 5 stars no better than any other thermos   August 6, 2008

I'm giving this 2 stars just for its looks. It is a nice-looking thermos but so far has not proven any better at keeping things hot than any other one on the market. I poured boiling water into the thermos, sealed it and let it sit for 20 minutes or so. I emptied the water, put a filter cone filled with coffee on top and poured boiling water through that into the thermos. Sealed it up, took it to work, had a small cup of coffee. About 5 hours later, mid-afternoon, I poured what was not really hot coffee for a 2nd small cup and when I went to freshen that it was totally luke warm. I suppose I could buy a little coffee maker, brew the coffee in that and pour that straight into the thermos, but doing it the way I am, which may inherently result in less hot coffee, is simpler and how I want to prepare it. Seems like, even brewing it the way I am, should stay much hotter, much longer.

5 out of 5 stars Great Thermos   June 5, 2008
There isn't much to say about a thermos. This works exactly like I wanted it to. It keeps my tea hot all day, it pours nicely into its cup-lid, and it's easy to get to work. The only minor complaint I have is that the opening is fairly small, but I think it's worth it for the benefit of a conveniently sized thermos. Would definitely recommend this for anyone who would be using it on a daily basis.

5 out of 5 stars Chiming in with a glowing review   June 2, 2008
Based upon the excellent critical and positive reviews here, I purchased this Thermos, and I'm not at all disappointed. It's exceeded my expectations, in fact.

An example: I filled it with hot green tea yesterday at noon. It's now 9:30am, more than 20 hours later. I was expecting lukewarm, or even room temperature, tea, and was surprised to be greeted with steam when I unscrewed the stopper! It's still hot! Not as hot, of course, but I also did not "pre-warm" the thermos with hot water before putting in the tea.

Other things I've done wrong besides not pre-warming would be filling it too full, then screwing in the stopper and causing a little overflow (there has to be room for the stopper, obviously). Even with the stopper in tight, this is a recipe for spills as the liquid moves around, expands and contracts, plays cards, whatever those crazy liquid molecules do in a Thermos. However, the "lid/cup/cap" thing you screw onto the very top caught 99% of the spill after the overfilled thermos Jostled around in my accouterments. I know this because the inside of my bag was not a mess (a tiny little wet spot on a paper, but I like tea stains anyway), but when I unscrewed the lid/cup/cap thing, all the spill came out. Thank you, lid! That could have been bad. This is a product that compensates for user-error.

The construction is fantastic. It's strong and pleasant to look at, and it feels like it holds much more liquid than you'd think it should by its appearance. When I'm filling it, I keep pouring and pouring. Isn't it full yet? No? More! It's shiny, though, and will show fingerprints and water spots. Not that I care. It's very LIGHT. I was expecting it to weigh much more. It's lighter by far, even filled to overflow, than all the books I lug around with me.

I only have two (minor) critical observations. The stopper must be screwed tightly into the bottle. This can make it difficult to open if you have, say, lotion on your hands (I often do). It's also a little hard to clean. It's not a big deal if you have a bottle brush, and even if you don't, you can just fill it with water, a little soap, and shake it around. Just make sure you get all the soap out. And finally, the pouring is not flawless. It dribbles a little. I don't really care. If I do it with skill, it doesn't dribble at all, and it's pretty ingenious to use the stopper as a pouring mechanism (you pour with the stopper in place but unscrewed somewhat).

Is this a Japanese design (Nissan) with an American label (Thermos) manufactured in China? Or an American design with a Japanese label manufactured in China? I think it's the former, making use of some Thermos patents. It is definitely a bi-lingual product, having instructions in both English and Japanese hiragana on the stopper. That way, if someone who does not know what "pour" means, they will hopefully know what "susugu" means.

I've had it about a week. It does come under warranty (it says 5 years on the box, but it says 1 year in the instructions, seems like a finicky replacement program, and you have to send the thermos away for a new one, and only at their option), though I don't expect to need it. If something went wrong after a few years, I'd happily buy a new one. I suppose the warranty is to catch defective units, like one described in another review which did not hold temperatures.

There was also a complaint by someone that theirs smelled like coffee. I really don't think Amazon is selling used units. They just kind of smell like that (the materials and processing do smell vaguely like coffee, I'll admit, but it is not coffee).

Thank you to all the reviewers who made this excellent purchase a no-brainer for me. I hope my review will be equally helpful in assisting other potential buyers.
