2 out of 5 stars hopless battery   August 4, 2008
Initially very pleased with the iRobot Roomba, & recommended it to numerous relatives & friends, & many of them then purchased iRobots for themselves.
Now I'm not recommending it anymore! Very poor battery life ! At $70 + s&h it becomes an annual expense I can do without.
Yes it works well when it is working, & even the very frequent cleaning of brushes don't put me off. However when the battery begins to lose life after only 6 months & will only push the iRobot around for 15 minutes before recharge is required, it is no longer a viable piece of equipment, even if you have given it a cute pet name ( its not what I would call it today ). It has become just another bit of clutter for the garage.
Hey well, back to the old upright I guess, not so cute but much more efficient.

I have no regrets about purchasing the Roomba. It helps to keep the carpet clean between sessions with the full-sized vacuum. I can run the Roomba as often as I like without worry, which helps to keep the dog hair at bay. It doesn't get stuck with power cords or suck them up which is great. Just turn it on and let it run on your way to work and you come home to a cleaner floor. Fabulous! Granted cleaning out the hair (dog hair + my long hair) out of the brush can be a bit of a pain but the cleaning tool really eases process. Now I only wish my dog weren't afraid of the little robot - I was hoping she'd get a kick out of it and try to play with it but no such luck. She just runs away whenever Roomba gets too close and looks at me for help.

4 out of 5 stars If you buy used, Read this!!!   June 25, 2008
Alright, if you have hard wood, this is your dream! If you have shag or low pile, it really won't work well.
Now here is the Used buyer beware. I had not had a roomba before, and 30 mins after taking him out of the box, I was expert. First thing you need to do with a used machine is take the filter out! Take it out, and clean it cause people dont do that EVER! Second, take the brushes off. Can you get them off and on? Do they fit your machine? Are they dirty? In short, know your machine BEFORE you try to use it. After the purchase of a broken robot (i fixed him) AND another robot, I can say with assurance that the filter was NASTY both times. You say I am being to harsh? If your upright vac wont suck, would you empty the bag? If you check the filter, roomba should work well used.

1 out of 5 stars Beware of used Roomba's!   May 29, 2008

We purchased a used Roomba Discovery on Amazon recently. It was advertised as being in like new condition. We charged the battery according to the instructions we found on iRobot's website. After being fully charged we tried to use it. It ran for a total of five minutes before the battery died. After a lot of trial and error and reading about the vacuum online we discovered that the battery should have been removed before being shipped. If you leave the battery inside the robot for a significant amount of time without vacuuming it will ruin the battery. Actually, in this case it ruined the entire vacuum. iRobot recommended we get our money back because nothing could be done to repair this robot.

4 out of 5 stars Great, but may die young   May 22, 2008

First, I love the Roomba. It works as advertised and cleans places hard to reach with regular vacs. You'll need to do your own "inside" corners though as the round form does not reach there.

Second, be prepared for a short life: Forget that old GE vacuum that your mom ran with for over twenty years. My little cleaning robot croaked after two years. It just stopped re-charging, even after I popped for a new $40 battery, thinking that was the problem. Web searches had no real answer for this somewhat common issue.

After working through IRobot customer service's standard suggestions, they finally said they'd sell me a replacement model if I'd return the old one to them. However, their reduced price along with the price for a not-included new power supply was more than a new unit from Amazon.

So, I'm the proud owner of a new Roomba, which goes to show how lazy I am about vacuuming. Now I'm waiting for the "Fool me twice..." adage to kick in.
