5 out of 5 stars LOVE OF MY LIFE!   May 4, 2008

I HAVE HAD THIS ROBOT FOR A FEW MONTHS NOW. STILL WORKS GREAT. NO PROBLEMS. I HOPE IT CONTINUES TO DO SUCH A GREAT JOB FOR ME. I HAVE BACK PROBLEMS AND VERY HAPPY TO FIND SOMETHING THAT GETS THE DOG HAIR UP. I USE IT ABOUT TWICE A WEEK.

5 out of 5 stars Go Roomba!   April 15, 2008

I've had my Roomba Discovery since Christmas 2004. I've replaced the battery once. Twice I've had technical difficulties with the Roomba and both times the problem was quickly solved by one phone call to Roomba's friendly, efficient personnel: the first time, I was sent a new Roomba and recently I was sent upgraded software. Both fixes were at no charge, not even shipping, which is remarkable for a product more than 3 years old. Roomba picks up all debris in his path, including spilled canary seed and the leavings of six grandchildren who hang out at my house. He picks up lint and dust that are not apparent to my naked eye. He hops on and off low-pile area rugs with no problem, and works well on hardwood and slate. His dust bin and filter are very easy to empty, the brushes remove easily for cleaning; I also give him a thorough dust-off with compressed air so that fine particles don't settle in to clog his sensors. He is not silent, but is quiet enough that my infant grandson naps while Roomba runs circles around him. My housekeeper comes every other week and Roomba does the job on the alternate weeks. Since he can't get at the furniture and window sills, he won't completely replace our canister vacuum. But this little guy is great and my family and I have become quite fond of him.

I bought one in November. It worked 3 times for about an hour, and then the brush motor failed.
Irobot customer service is a nightmare. I called and spoke with there support. Support said they would email an RMA number along with shipping instructions. After waiting several days with no email I called again. I finally got an RMA number.

I had to ship it at my own expense. I shipped ups on 12-3-07. They received it in 2 days. On 12-19-07 they had not sent me back a working robot. I sent an email and was told:

"Thank you for writing. We apologize for the delay. At this time our warehouse is conducting an inventory and will not be able to process any shipments until this inventory is complete. You will be notified via email as soon as the package is released. The email will also include the UPS tracking number."

I emailed again on 12-30-07 and got the same reply:

Thank you for writing. We apologize for the delay. At this time our warehouse is conducting an inventory and will not be able to process any shipments until this inventory is complete. You will be notified via email as soon as the package is released. The email will also include the UPS tracking number.

On 1-10-08 I called Irobot customer support. I spoke with Katrina and she agreed to ship my replacement unit. Finally on 1-13-08 they shipped the replacement. But the nightmare with Irobot support was not over yet

I charged the battery. The robot vacuumed for 20 minutes then the battery ran out of charge. After only 20 minutes. I charged it up again over night and this time it ran for an hour.

A couple weeks later I went to use it again and the battery was out of charge. I charged it overnight. Nothing. The battery will not charge. Got a hold of customer support again. They told me to do unplug the battery, clean the connections, and plug the charger directly into the robot (not the dock). I did this overnight for the next few nights but nothing. The battery was still dead.

So I called irobot customer support again over the next couple weeks but got nowhere with them. Their goal is to do absolutely nothing. But finally I got hold of Katrina and she handed me over to the supervisor. The supervisor did agree to give me another RMA.

It costs me about $15 to send the robot in. I spent $174.00 including shipping. I got 4 hours and 20 minutes use out of it. So far it has cost me $43.64 for each hour of use. Now if I spend another $15 to send it in for a replacement, how long wills the replacement work.

I learned my lesson. I am not going to waist another $15 to send this back for another exchange. And maybe another hour and 20 minutes use after that. Best to throw it away in the trash and move on. And, never ever buy another irobot vacuum again.

We have had this Roomba about 3 weeks now. At first I was fascinated with it, the sounds, its programmed directions when hitting a wall, chair, whatever -- it was amazing! And, the dirt is picked up! We now feel that it will work for us BUT the battery seems to not recharge completely so it will work for about one hour plus then go into RED mode and try to find the recharger station. It has a tendency to not want to walk up and engage the recharger. Sometimes it just wanders about, so won't dock. We are going to try a few other locations to see if that works better.
Oh, if you have only wood floors it will probably work flawlessly. We are 60% carpeted so it constantly will back away from going up on the carpets or runners, sometimes spin around and then walk up onto the carpets. And, watch out for the shagged ends on some rugs. What we do is just lift all the runners and get them off the floor. The tasseled ends would get caught but the Roomba would twist around to dislodge and keep on going.
Clean up is easy, if you don't mind dust, dirt and all else it catches in the tray. Just dump it in the garbage sack. Use gloves, if you are sensitive to all that stuff. The filter gets clogged every time we run it. So, recommend cleaning both tray & filter each time. It is not hard to do, in fact, very simple -- only two steps.
One last thing, it will hang up under low couches and chairs, gets caught -- then you have to go find it and redock to charge up the batteries.
By the way, the cats follow it around while it is working. Curious you know!
Overall, we are amazed at how well it cleans. The few problems, we can work around. I guess we'll keep it
