5 out of 5 stars Better than Expected   January 14, 2008
A friend highly recommended this item and I, a bit skeptic, thought it would be helpful, but probably not as good as my friend said it was. However I am very impressed with how good a job the Discovery does in a household of multiple pets which includes a daily chore of vacuuming up dog hair and bird seed. Bird seed can be a difficult job for any vacuum, but this one is doing an excellent job of keeping our home much cleaner. Now while I'm feeding the pets, Romba's Discovery is cleaning up after the pets. We make a good team!

5 out of 5 stars Fun and functional!   January 13, 2008
For $164, this upgraded version is a very good value at just $15 more than the base model Rommba Red. This was a gift, and the recipient is very happy. She worked Roomba very hard the first couple weeks, and so far so good. Everything works as described, and the ability to self-charge has been nice for her. The volume of debris Roomba can handle and hold is more than you would think. It's nice to be able to work in one room and hear Roomba working in the other. Better for households that do not have a lot of furniture and toys and junk all over the floor all the time, for constant light cleaning. We recommend Roomba, but keep up on the maintenance, which can be high compared to a regular vaccuum.

2 out of 5 stars Lack of service   January 12, 2008

I had a roomba and loved it. It got old and needed to be replaced. I got the new one and it quit working within 2 months. Upon contacting Irobot I sent it back in order to get a replacement. Replacement had no battery (I guess I was supposed to keep the old one). Upon contacting the company again, I was told,
"We apologize for the inconvenience. However any parts or accessories sent to us are not retrievable, you will have to purchase a new battery."

Yeah, thanks. I'd rather buy a robot from another company. You have my battery and I now have a robot that can't do anything because it has no power.

3 out of 5 stars If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is...   January 11, 2008

Based on other reviews, I had high hopes for the Roomba, and there is definitely a "wow" factor when you get it. But then reality sets in... Despite the high price and relatively sophisticated programming, the manufacturing quality is poor, with cheap, flimsy materials used throughout. When my unit failed after 6 months (stripped gears on the brush drivetrain) I did a little more internet digging and found an entire subculture devoted to folks repairing their Roombas, even trying to fabricate replacement parts from better materials. Also, it was not as big a time saver as hoped. The room must be totally Roomba-proofed before use, as any stray piece of string, fabric, electrical cords, throw rugs, etc. will jam the brushes (which is probably how my gears got stripped). As others have noted, the Roomba will get confused by too many chair legs or other tight spaces. The vacuum does work, although not as well as a regular vac. selling for much less. On the plus side, it's a good way to keep the dirt under control between more thorough cleanings with a regular vacuum, and it is kind of fun to watch. Bottom line--Roomba should work well if you have a simply-furnished space, not too much long pet hair, pick up things that could jam the brushes, and supervise its work. Just don't expect too much, and be sure to get an extended warranty.

5 out of 5 stars A Roomba In Every Home!   January 7, 2008
The Roomba is one of those products that after you get it, you don't know how long you survived without it.

With the introduction of the Scooba, we can only hope that iRobot continues to invent things to automate the boring parts of life!
