5 out of 5 stars Great Appliance!   November 15, 2006

This thing is great, it sweeps my kitchen and bathroom, and cleans the carpet around the house. I have two kids who are constantly generating crumbs and dirt all over the house, and the roomba sweeps/vacuums them up before they have a chance to be ground into the carpet or get stuck to the kitchen floor. The roomba does not have a powerful vacuum motor, only a small one, so a roomba is not a replacement for a high powered vacuum cleaner. The roomba will prevent you from pulling out the high powered vac every day though, more like once in a great while if you're like me. I run my roomba daily, and end up with a bunch of crumbs, pieces of wrappers, hair, and misc junk each time I empty it, and the filter catches a bundle of carpet lint and dust about half that of what a clothes dryer produces on a normal dry cycle. Beware of things like hair ties, socks, dryer sheets, shoe laces, stray cords, rugs with loose fibers, carpets with loose fibers, as these things can get caught up in the roombas brushes. It is necessary to pick up such items prior to starting your roomba, as these items can cause the roomba to stop mid cycle (it has sensors to protect itself), or in the event of sucking up too many such items, can lead to premature failure of the brush motor. The reliability of roombas is not extremely high, they do fail, especially in very harsh conditions (like mine). I recommend buying a retail package for the 1 year warranty. If you can purchase where extended warranties are offered, that is a good idea as well. You will find this product will save you enough time to pay for itself many times over in the course of a year... and if that isn't enough for you... Remember.. it's just cool.

2 out of 5 stars Fair Engineering, Very Poor Manufacturing   September 10, 2006

This model is sort of smart so kudos to the guys at MIT. However, there are consequences to contracting out the manufacturing process to a cut rate Chinese firm. I'm waiting for my third replacement unit as I write this. The brush motor burned out in my original 4220 in about 9 months and the 4221 replacement only lasted 2.5 months. I'm now out of warranty and figure I have three months of life left in this $300 purchase.

Really, selling a plastic toy with no possibility of repair is just criminal. Shame on IRobot...shame.

3 out of 5 stars Great Idea. Bad Execution.   August 14, 2006

My husband got me this Roomba before the birth of my 2nd son thinking it would really help me with the vacuuming. The time I spend just prepping the house for the Roomba was a pain in the neck. We have alot of area rugs with fringes on the ends that needed to be cut then when we actually got Roomba set up to be used, it always thought it was 'falling' off of the rugs and wouldn't go anywhere else.
It worked great on hardwood... if you have no rugs. We covered the sensors which helped, but defeated the purpose of using it on the landing on the staircase.
Also, we have white trim in our house and the Roomba left scuff marks on it where it bumped into it going around the rooms. It also leaves obvious scratch marks on the hardwood.

The only thing I did like about the Roomba was being able to have it vacuum a room while I did other things. Using it this way takes forever though and it wouldn't be done with the room before the battery ran out.

IRobot has some upgrades it needs to do with this. It is a great concept and if the execution was right, this would be an amazing product.

5 out of 5 stars Love my Roomba   July 18, 2006

I've had my Roomba for almost two years. It is the best thing! It is so thorough and picks up things you wouldn't think it could. We have two large Dobermans and they leave hair where they lay. Roomba cleans it up with ease and looks for more. I had to have major back surgery almost a year ago and Roomba really saved me. It kept the house looking pretty darned good until I could do the deep cleaning again by myself. I highly recommend this product to anyone with back problems-it sure helps alot.
I did have to replace a battery a few months ago, but Roomba continues to do a great job.
