5 out of 5 stars Best printer I've owned so far!   September 30, 2008
6 out of 6 found this review helpful

The good:
* This printer is one of the best I've owned so far!
* It prints quickly, and the colors are good.
* Setup was easy and fast; my three Macs and one Dell PC all print to (and scan from) it wirelessly.
* I can select any of my computers -- including my Macs -- from the printer LCD and scan to it.
* I can "print" any document as a fax to a phone number, and that works well.
* The 11x17 paper size is GREAT for the kinds of documents I print.
* I can see supply levels from my Macs...wirelessly.
* I can't stress enough how impressed I am with the wireless support for this printer in the Mac drivers. I've tried a variety of Airport Express units and dedicated WiFi printer hubs with other printers (HP, Epson, and Canon) in the past, and they either didn't work, or only had partial functionality. This is the first one that does everything on both the Mac and Windows XP without compromise.

The bad:
* It doesn't print double-sided without having to manually flip the paper over; I thought I read somewhere it would, but it doesn't. One of the benefits of 11x17 paper is to print 4-panel "booklets" and this manual step slows that down.
* The Auto Document Feeder only seems to work when faxing; I haven't been able to figure out how to use it for scanning. Perhaps it doesn't, or I just don't know how to make it work...

The unknown:
* I've read about how quickly the ink runs out on this printer, but I haven't experienced that yet. I'll let you know if this is a problem after I've had the printer long enough to find out.

All in all, I'm VERY happy with this printer purchase.

4 out of 5 stars Great All in One - Not Perfect but does the job as Promised   September 15, 2008

I bought this at Office Max the other day for $2*1*9. We already have a Brother B&W Laser printer but we needed a fax and copier at home. So I leaned towards adding color to compliment the monochrome laser. I would have liked to get a color laser all-in-one with WiFi instead of an inkjet but those babies are pretty expensive (try double or more this cost). Anyhow, I picked this behemoth up, plugged it in, followed the directions and had the WiFi working in about an hour. Now we can print from all of the computers at home! I'm always a bit leary about setting up WiFi but it actually worked without a hitch. It found my wireless network, I loaded the software and drivers onto my computer and wife's laptop and we're off to the races. I really like the color LCD screen on the printer, it let's you know what mode your in and exactly whats happening with the printer. Forget the 1960s technology of colored lights typical on most printers.

I've tested: outgoing fax, printing photos on regular paper, color documents, and copy function. All things work good. The only reason for knocking off one star was because the color saturation could be better, but I guess I'm a bit spoiled using the color laser printer here at work. I'm going to try a few different paper types and see if that helps. I've yet to test printing photos on photo paper but suspect it will be just average. Overall for less than $250 it fits the bill for what we need it for.

5 out of 5 stars Impressive feature set   September 2, 2008

I had a 3-year-old HP all-in-one that has been the shared household printer for 4 users. It finally went south on me and when i went to replace it i saw the MFC-6490CW at the local Staples ... actually my wife pointed it out to me. I have always needed a large format printer and a fax readily available which meant having two machines. This beauty eliminates the need for them. I took me less than two hours to set it up and get the drivers installed on an XP desktop, a Vista laptop, and XP laptop and a Linux laptop [Ubuntu 8.04] all using a WiFi connection. Brother really has their act together offering the Linux drivers, too.
