1 out of 5 stars Only used it twice...   July 6, 2008
The first time I used it, it was fine. The second time, when the probe was unplugged it read the temp as "lo". When the probe was plugged in, it read "hi" and beeped continually. The probe tip was not inserted into anything to be reading a temperature! I'll try a replacement and let you know how that works. Good think I didn't wait too long to try it!

4 out of 5 stars Works fine but I have only used it twice so far   June 30, 2008
No problems with this unit yet. I am using it in my vertical smoker, even though the instructions state not to use it in a smoker or grill. But I figure that the smoker is only used to about 290 Degrees at the most, so I don't see how it will hurt. The only other thing I don't care for is that there is no "Off" button on it, the display is always on. I guess thats because you could use it as a plain timer if you like, but it makes me wonder about battery life.

1 out of 5 stars broken on first use   June 26, 2008

I received this about a month ago, but didn't use it until earlier this week.

It worked for about 20 minutes, then broke.

I was cooking chicken at 350 degrees in my oven, and I noticed that the temperature was going up very quickly - like 2 degrees a second. When it reached 170 degrees, I checked with a simple analog instant-read thermometer, and was disappointed to see that the meat was actually only 140 degrees.

So I left the chicken in the oven to cook for longer, and 10 minutes later the Polder readout started going wacko - all the way up to 388 degrees before it simply read: "HI."

I checked again with the analog thermometer until I got the chicken cooked to a safe temperature.

The chicken turned out fine, but this Polder thermometer is a turkey. :)

1 out of 5 stars Not for the Grill!   June 26, 2008

I ordered the similar Polder Classic thermometer/timer (the same unit as this except for the color) based on the strength of the positive reviews. It is an excellent timer, functionally very easy and intuitive to use. I even checked the accuracy of the temperature probe prior to use, and it was very good (read 32 degrees exactly; boiling was 2 degrees low--really quite good for an inexpensive device!) However, despite being very careful about routing the temperature probe cord away from the grill grates and up/away from the flames, the probe immediately died when I tried to use it on some thick steaks. I assume the heat (550 degrees inside the grill) was too much for it. I don't know how others got it to work (some did, some did not)--perhaps it is poor quality control, and some probes are OK, but this one is going back....

5 out of 5 stars Nice!!   June 21, 2008

Just what I was hoping for when I bought it. The ability to monitor the temperature accurately while it's in the oven--without having to open the door all of the time. Purchsed for prime-rib, used for a variety of other items. :)
