3 out of 5 stars Works great until probe fails - no replacement!   May 1, 2005
4 out of 5 found this review helpful

I have had one of these for 3 years. It worked really well. Then, the probe burned out (I think I pushed it too far into thin meat
and it hit the grill rack); it shows 199 degrees - so I assume this means the probe is bad.
You cannot buy a new probe! This is absurd. If any product should allow you to replace a part, this is it. But, I have had a lot of success with it until now (3 years).

Note that if you have something else which transmits at 433MHz, do not get it. This product cannot tolerate interference from something else - no special band hopping or anything.

The instruction tell you only in very small print that if the probe touches the metal grill that it burns out the thermister and they dont offer replacement parts so you buy a new one and read the instructipons fine, fine print.

5 out of 5 stars Used To Be...Best One of the Bunch   March 23, 2005
REVISED OPINION: I bought one of these a few years ago from my local "Big Box" retailer and I'm glad I saved the receipt. I have since been through about seven. I can't figure out the problem but all eventually read 199 after a few minutes. Some last several months, one over a year. The new one I just picked up lasted all of 15 minutes.UUUrrrrh. I've checked to make sure the cable is straight, not pinched and that all parts are doing what they should, but I've given up on this model. I also noticed when I picked this new unit up at the "Big Box" place that they're discontinuing it so I got two for one. Big deal, two lousy units. Anybody find a good reliable unit let me know. GT

1 out of 5 stars Very displeased!   February 5, 2005

You can't choose the temperature, the thermometer decides. Well, I don't WANT my beef cooked to a minimum of 145. I don't want to overcook my poultry to 180.

You have to reset it by taking the battery covers off both the remote and the base every time you use it.

This is a very poorly planned item. I expected better from Weber.

1 out of 5 stars Unreliable near junk   January 19, 2005

Weber should be ashamed. This thing has a hard time keeping communication with the probe over ANY distance down to a few inches. Weber says that it has a range of 100 feet. Baloney.

Using it is an exercise in frustration. Do yourself a favor, if you want to buy one, just burn the $30 it costs. At least you will not waste your time trying to get it to work.

This is the second Weber accessory I've bought that is worthless. Also bought the illuminating handle for gas grills. That melted.

I think these guys only know how to make good grills. Nothing else.
