5 out of 5 stars The Perfect Grill   May 20, 2005
13 out of 14 found this review helpful

Once you finally realize that charcoal alone is the only way to go, this is the grill you get.

No Lighter Fluid Necessary
Spacious Cooking and Prep Area
Easy Ash Disposal
Integrated Charcoal Stoarage

Everything you need and nothing you don't. Just the way I like it.

5 out of 5 stars Form vs Function   April 14, 2005

There has been a lot of talk about the '05 model vs the older model. I just sold my old style model for New Performer and am very happy with it. For all its nice looks, the old Performer has some major design flaws and in some senses is more form than function. For starters, the stainless charcoal bin door lid also serves as the work surface, which is a huge pain when you are adding more coals as you have to move your food or dishes. It's also not that stable due to its dual function. Due to its placement, when taking coals out of the bin, the dust gets all over the stainless surface. Stainless looks pretty, however it's really not the best material for a work surface b/c it stratches and you will be be wiping it down all the time. The Thermoset plastic may feel cheap, but its very easy to clean and easier to maintain. The stainless tool holder attachments are also extremely flimsy in the old version as they clip on during assembly and are often knocked loose. Although I love the grill, these issues always bugged me, particularly the door issue.

Rather than trying to be cheap, I think that Weber has addressed some of the major design flaws with this grill with the '05 model. The charcoal bin can now be accessed from the side and the thermoset work surface is probably more practical when working with a charcoal grill. It also looks is if some solid tool holders have been molded into the frame. Given that the old 5lb gas tank would probably last a few years with regular use, I think Weber saw this as a chance to both save some space and reduce some cost without a great inconvenience. It seems as if you will only need 1-2 disposable cartridges per season. Finally, my guess is that by brining down the pricepoint and splitting the difference with the old one touch platinum, Weber is hoping this version will appeal to a larger crowd. As great as the old Peformer was, there just aren't a lot of people that are going to spend $400 on a charcoal grill, except for the die hards like me.

5 out of 5 stars But not completely thought out.   March 21, 2005

Last fall we purchased the earlier version of this to replace our 20 year old Weber 22-1/5 standard kettle. The only real differance I can see between the 04 and 05 models are a larger stainless steel top, larger refillable tank and perhaps a stronger frame. We purchased this model because we thought the propane ignition would save us time and trouble. We use the indirect cooking method exclusively and always had to start the one side after the other, a 20 minute process. Problem is the charcoal baskets furnished with the new grill do not hold as many brickets as we could pile up behind the retainers in our old grill and so we can't reach the temprature we are used to. The stuffed turkey took 2 extra hours! If the baskets were flared to match the sides of the kettle they would hold roughly the same number of coals. So instead we now dump them out behind the retainers that we transfered from our old grill, a hot dangerous process. Other than this inconvience we are very happy with it.

3 out of 5 stars Still better than the gas   March 18, 2005

I agree that this is a downgrade from the old model but its $200 dollars cheaper. It has a smaller plastic table instead of large stainless steel one. I think I would like the gas controls to be on the out side rather than in the charcole storage bin like the old... its quite annoying to be to have to clear off my work space just to get to the gas controls to turn it off/on... I just want to make it clear that I beleive that this is still the best grill for the money! its as easy as a gas grill with all the taste of the charcole!! I love coming home pouring the charcole lighting the gas. When I come back from the kitchen after preparing the meat the charcole is glowing just turn off the gas and you there! I justified the cost of my old performer ($550) with webers 10 year warranty. I was in the same boat as most people I love meat.. dont have time to do the whole charcole thing during the week and I too stooped down and considered gas unitl I found this.. you wont regret the investment. and your stomach will thank you for sticking with charcole!

2 out of 5 stars Older is better   March 18, 2005

I absolutely love my older Performer. While the new grill is priced slightly less than the original, it is of significantly less quality. While the new version has a flimsy heat resistant plastic work surface, the older grill has a larger stainless steel surface. The charcoal storage bin in the older version can hold almost twice the amount as the newer version. This newer version appears to be designed to allow Weber to continue to sell the Performer close to the same price price as the original, but provide a larger profit margin for the company. This looks like a cheaper "economy" model and is a step backwards.

I've cooked on many different Webers, including the Genesis line. I've cooked on charcoal and gas grills from other leading manufacturers. Some of these cost thousands. The older version of the Weber Performer is probably still my favorite. I was planning to buy my son a Performer as a Christmas gift this year. You can bet I'll be looking for the older version--even if it costs more.
