5 out of 5 stars product works   December 4, 2006

after owning several salton 3cup rice makers that died (see reviews on them - a lemon model), i decided to try this rice maker. this is a simple design that works just fine. i normally cook rice that i eat over a day or so, then scoop portions out for different meals. as such, a "keep warm" feature is not desired by me (this has no keep warm feature). the lack of an off switch is not a problem - the thing turns itself off when done, and i tend to store it unplugged anyway. the pot is the same size as the 3 cup salton, so my old pots will work if this pot is in dishwasher. this does spit a little from the steam hole, so i aim it at the sink - not really a problem. there are many fancier models which i don't need, and some cheaper brands which i have several dead examples. i don't know how long this may last, but i hope it lasts longer than the saltons! if you want a keep-warm feature or some fancy electronics, or the cheapest 3cup model, this isn't for you; if you want something that just does what it is supposed to do, i'd suggest considering this cooker.

4 out of 5 stars Satisfactory Rice Cooker   August 20, 2006

This is my first rice cooker. I find it satisfactory. Rice comes out nice and fluffy provided you let the rice "sit" in the steaming pan for 15 minutes after the cooking switch has loudly clicked off. So you have to mentally time this interval.

Complaints voiced by others about a retractable power cord and absence of an on/off switch were of no consequence to me. The unit is relatively small for easy storage and very easy to clean.

As others have mentioned a small, slight brown crust forms on the rice at the bottom center. I found this annoying but not a big deal as 99.9% of the rice is cooked nicely.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of money.   July 7, 2006

Unless you are planning to serve the rice right after it is done cooking, this product is not good. I used this product for a year already, when I was away from home. First of all, it does not keep the rice warm once it is done cooking. Once it starts to cool, the water vapor in the condenses and water will soak into the rice, making it soggy. However, another one of their rice cookers has worked really well for my family: Zojirushi NSRNC-18A Automatic Rice Cooker and Warmer with Floral Imprint. This rice cooker is great, leaving my rice moist and warm. It lasted for almost 10 years and is still in great working condition.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but pricey replacement parts!   March 23, 2006

I've had this rice cooker for 1.5 years and it's the perfect size for our little family of 4 (2 adults, 2 little kids). The nonstick surface is great. Unfortunately the lid broke today. It fell on the floor before but the metal rim prevented it from breaking so I don't know why it broke this time. I only found one online store carrying the replacement lid (Zojirushi did not offer parts for sale)... for twenty-five dollars, shipped. Add thirteen more dollars and I could get a brand new unit here. So Amazon's got a good bargain. Just don't drop the lid.

1 out of 5 stars Not a good choice to cook rice   December 31, 2005

This rice cooker should be an embarassment to Zojirushi. Do not buy it.

It lacks an on/off switch, but, more imporantly, it makes a terrible mess of the device and the area around it when you cook rice in it. It is nearly as easy to cook rice and much easier to clean if you use a pot with water than to use this device.

You will be very unhappy if you buy this cooker. I have used it once and will never use it again--except as a door stop. There are other, genuinely useful rice cookers available here for the money.
